The only time I've heard someone who actually TRIED BBM not think it was great is when they had very few friends who had it. Once you use it to it's potential, there is nothing else even comparable and that isn't debatable.

Not debating. But I have tried it with a class mate when I got my hands on a bold 9700 last year. After a couple days still didn't get impressed. But this is just personal.

It is not about comparable, it is about whether you like it or not, and in my case I didn't find it that great compared to ebuddy. Plus I can talk to multiple accounts on it which is bigger than BBM for me. Always on chatting is not my cup of tea. Got the unlimited calling plan for just that :)

Still for some people it will be the best experience. Just shows nothing is truly the absolute supreme in the world of tech :)

umm yes the update has group conversations and what do you think those green checkmarks are for? 1 check fo delivered 2 for read, anything else?

Completely false about the check marks. One means sent from your phone and the second is delivered to their phone. Has nothing to do with being read. Anything else?

And just to prove it, this is DIRECTLY from the Whatsapp's website:

What are those green checkmarks next to my messages?
We are glad you asked. These green checkmarks are actually very important since they function as message delivery acknowledgement indicators. Here is what they mean:

- message successfully delivered to the server.

- message succesfully delivered to the device of the chat partner. (note: this does not indicate that message was read, just that it was delivered)

It's not the full BBM you would see on the actual Blackberry device. It's just a 'taste' in order to get people to switch to their devices. It's only going to be text with no picture or video sending. It's kinda pointless in my eyes. Whatsapp is much better and a lot of my backberry owner friends already have it.

a lot of you just dont get it or just refuse to accept that there is a thriving world outside of iOS, BBM is the single reason why most BB users will not give up their blackberrys
You could make the same statement for BB users as well.

Agreed. There are fanboys on both sides. But if you look at the situation honestly, iOS is a FARRRRRRRRR superior operating system but BBM is the best real time communication software. Bring BBM to iOS and you have the best of both worlds (unless it's a considerably stripped down version).

fair enough so if whatsapp had the "read" feature would it be missing anything else?

confirming it was delivered is great becasue SMS sometimes never make it to the person, do you have an example of why knowing they read it is that important?

do people ignore you and you need confirmation of this?

well RIM motive is to get rid of the 3rd party guys like, Kik, whatsapp, ping chat, and Apples motive is to give their customers something else keep them happy and try to get more customers
RIM even sued Kik and didn't allow them to have a Kik app for Blackberry anymore. I guess this was so that they could be the only game in town while Kik is stuck in legal limbo.

Whatsapp is pretty terrible. I hate how it works and it doesn't even have the features people need.

It sends pictures faster than mms over 3G so that's the only reason I use it. I put it on my family members phones incase we want to group chat fast without calling. But other than that I like the sms app.

Whatsapp just sucks. Half of my contacts don't even have it on their devices anymore but there is no way to see who uses it and who doesn't (just the last login date). It was a fad for about 2 weeks but has fallen off pretty quickly.

I think I may the only person here who doesn't know anyone with a Blackberry.

Everyone always get excited about BBM but I honestly can't think of a single person I know who I'd use it with.

To me, this is the only understandable reason why someone wouldn't use BBM (or would use SMS over BBM).

sounds odd that your friends(contacts) dont have the time to add 1 app so they can chat with non bb uses and vice versa, maybe they want to be in this special BBM club, exclusive members only

You misunderstood what I was saying. Some of my contacts have had Whatsapp at some point or another but were barely using it and failed to install it on a new device or after restoring a device. This has led to me having a contact list that is cluttered with people who don't even use the app and me having to figure out who has it and who doesn't.

That's like saying Apple is going to start marketing their multi-touch technology to other companies. This smells fishy...

I guess they're looking to get out of the handset business?

I don't get it.....the main reason most of the people I know stay with Blackberry is because of the network they've built up with BBM. Without it, they'd bolt.

Agreed. This is one of the main advantages of a Blackberry. This just doesn't seem true.

i see what your saying, im not trying to argue just to argue, but you can easily say what if people on your bbm get new phones with new pins lets say half re-add you and half dont then you still are in the same situation, even worse the ones that do re add you and now you have 2 enteries and you have to test them to see what is the current(active) one

put it this way, your a huge greedy company(RIM) and a small time company(whatsapp) start to make a profit selling an app that primary does what your product(BBM) was already doing, do you

A. leave things be because the billions you make are already enough?
B. get your product out to more devices and kill the little guys business

if you pick A youve never seen the real greed of the corporate world

  • Delivered & read receipts
  • Faster than texting (at least on Blackberry)
  • Buddy list
  • Ability to allow someone to message you without giving them your mobile number. Also able to block that person later on if necessary.
  • Messages over data instead of cellular network
  • Location tagging
  • Ability to send files that you can't send over SMS (if it's made available on iOS version)
  • Status messages
  • Availability preferences (ex: in a meeting prevents BBM from disturbing you)
  • Much more reliable than 3rd party solutions
  • Ability to group contacts into categories

Just to name a few.

all these can be done with whatsapp, pingchat, beejive and others and they are already out! the 3 people i know with a blackberry all use whatsapp or pingchat instead of BBM....
