After all the delays, it is finally live, albeit if you didn't register for your BBM account when they first tried to go live last month, you may be in a waiting pattern.

I realize that many of you no longer use blackberries, have little love for the failing Blackberry brand, use iMessage and so forth and have little desire or use for BBM, but it is a great service and thought I would let those Android users that wanted to try it know that it is available.

Just go to: http://bbm.com and click the Play Store icon to get it. This ensures you don't download an unofficial app.

And we should see the service going live for iOS at any time. (Edit: It is now live.)

Please don't post any spiteful comments regarding this service. It's all been said before. Some of us may want to use it or at least try it. Thanks.

Why wouldn't we want to download the official app? And here I was thinking you worked for BBM..

So glad that the BBM app finally came out now that none of my friends have Blackberries anymore. Now we have phones with apps that have taken the place of BBM for a long time now.

Poor Blackberry, they just keep on fighting even when all hope is lost.

I didn't even notice this! I used my Apple ID email for iOS and my gmail ID for my Nexus 4 to sign up. Luckily, I don't need the same ID for multiple devices, but I can see this as a serious issue for some.

sms support for one and the ability to send videos. Basically a cross platform imessage alternative.

Oh, right. Yes, that'd be sweet. Sounds like it's coming with 4.4.

Is there anything worthwhile here? Any must have feature? I'm pretty happy with Textra on Android and was very happy with imessage on iOS so I'd be curious to see if BBM had anything worthwhile to make anyone consider switching.

The good thing about BBM is BBM Groups. I don't know any other texting platform that has this.

I wish my BBM invite would come through.

It doesn't take long. Mine came through already.
Too bad I only know 2 people with a Blackberry and I don't know their pin.

You don't need to share your email address or phone number with people, and people cannot contact you via BBM if they only know those.

I got mine at 3am Irish time. Not sure when I submitted my email but it would be some time after it was announced on The Verge since it wasn't available in Ireland then. Max 9 hours wait.

You give your "pin number" to someone you want to communicate with.

I was a bit excited but the UI isn't great and isn't smooth at all (stutterstutterstutter) and, now that the initial novelty wore off, I feel like this app doesn't really have much use.

The reason I'm getting BBM is just because it's more convinient than what's app.
When I travel, I always get a sim for my unlocked phone (I live in Canada) and I hate having to connect my what's app to a new number that non of my friends have. BBM allows me to get my new sim and number when I'm traveling with no hassle. Other than that, it's the same as what's app.
Apple really needs a way to streamline all msgs into one area.. So I don't have to keep switching between what's app and iMessage when I'm having a simotanious convo with two people on two different messangeing apps.
