This has nothing to do with my BMW ;) and it's in pristine condition, for a car. Which means normal wear n tear that cannot be avoided beyond waxing every 2 weeks. A passenger opened the door without care and the door smacked a concrete pole about 1 month ago..I had expected the worst..but couldn't find a single blemish.

In the past, my space gray devices have come in contact with many devices on my desktops and it didn't rub off the finish..pretty disappointed actually that the finish, albeit small as the nick is, rubbed off so easy just by rubbing the apple keyboard a bit when I opened the screen. The more I think about it, it really doesn't make sense to me.

I looked closely at my space gray iPad, iPhone, and MacBook and while all of them have no protection, they all have some minor blemish for normal use over the years. However, on my MacBook which is 1 year now, the space gray finish is a little effected in the exact same spot as my MacBook Pro but not as bad and that MacBook travels all over with me..and so does my iPad, which I just toss in my bag.

I do think that the back cover that faces the desk is prone to taking a little rubbing from time to time...but question how much my keyboard at my notebook

I'm so sorry but your post is a little confusing. Are you saying that your MBP is wearing well or badly in comparison to your other SG Apple products?

The anodize that produces space gray, or any other color, is not of a lesser quality than the anodized silver. It is absurd to suggest otherwise. Space Gray does not scratch "easier".

NewsFlash!!

Aluminum is fairly soft, and malleable.

Edited to add: I would be more than happy to manufacture titanium cases for the discriminating MBP user - just let me know and we'll happily prepare a quote for you, in a jiffy : )

Or we have to get away from this notion that these devices need to be coddled, protected and kept in showroom conditions. Small scratches and dents are just part of everyday life having a portable aluminum bodied device. It just gives it character IMO. Just like a comfortable pair of shoes, or a well used tool.

I liken it to seeing keyboard players onstage with rather expensive synths that have been scratched, dented, and knocked around moving from place to place, but still going strong and sounding as good as ever. Believe me, I know my view is likely unpopular. Buts it's my view nonetheless.

I completely agree with this sentiment.

I remember when Jobs unveiled the iphone 4 and likened it to a well-made camera - a Leica in fact. These types of cameras are works of art but they are built to be used and are inherantly tool like in construction. Jobs aspired to that blend of beauty and braun in Apple products and IMHO, the MBP is the greatest realisation of this vision. Incidentally, you will never see people wrapping their Leicas in plastic casings etc and most of them are worth far more than MBPs.

To take the MBP and wrap it in comparatively ugly and cheap looking plastics and obsessively stress over blemishes to the chassis is such a waste of your enjoyment and the machine's potential. The analogies here are endless - like wrapping sofas in plastic, preserving your girlfriend for the next man (thanks to the above poster for that gem!) attaching motorway covers to the front of your Porsche. Life is far too short!

Enjoy your machine and proudly note every blemish as a record of your living life.

The only way something gets scratched or scuffed is if the object scratching it has an equal or greater hardness.

There is no evidence that the space gray finish is more susceptible to scratching. I suspect that the finish simply makes scratches more noticeable than the silver.

So just avoid buying some gray products from now on. You do have a choice.

You are talking about regular wear and tear. over time. or **** happening. yes **** happens, and also, regular wear and tear happens. But this is about quality control and how quickly something is getting affected. It's due to a defect that's big enough to be observed with a human eye.

I am not suggesting that as a result we need to start a class law action suite against apple...obviously not. But need to still keep apple's standards high.

Guys as much as I'd like to continue, I have several photos of Dented YOLO MacBooks with broken hinges and non working screen mechanisms queued up to post but this subplot has run its course. Lets just shake on it and walk away so OP can get their issue resolved.

If someone wants to create a separate thread I'll gladly post there.

Just bring it back within 14 days and purchase a new one!
It's abviously not very kind to do so, but for sure it's not illegal :p

And folks wonder why Apple products cost so much!

Thank you for all the replies, thoughts, and comments.

I'm not going to return it... that would be taking advantage of Apple Care and I don't agree with doing that.

Good choice, and show of integrity!
