Funny story for the forum. When the iPhone 5 (I believe) was released I had been calling Apple Stores all over to see who had it in stock. One guy seemed so agitated that when I thanked him anyway despite them not having the phone he blurted out "excuse me?!" as I was hanging up, sounding as if he heard me say "ok, **** you" instead of "ok, thank you." I wouldn't doubt that he had to put up with a lot of unsavory people that day and was hearing things. So be super nice to your Apple reps and be sure to enunciate :p.

Pretty sure they have an automated response that says something along the line of "store availability of products cannot be verified over the phone". Even so, they use the same online tool we do. They go to apple.com and check the stock that way. Unless you say "store manager" you rarely get someone actually in the store and instead get a CSR.
