Touchbar separate to F keys (make trackpad smaller and bring keyboard down to make space)
I really like the massive trackpad, personally. I think they could instead accomplish this by adopting the more squarish 3:2 aspect ratio. It would create more vertical space on its own.

a fabulous WORKING keyboard
upgrade able components
lower the cost SSD drive options

Realistically, a 3584x2240 display with High Dynamic Range. 32 GB RAM to start with on the 16", or 16 GB on the 13"/14". 802.11ax would be nice, though for most people (myself included) this isn't of big importance yet.

I wouldn't mind one a bit smaller - edge to edge keyboard (à la the 12" MacBook), thinner bezels (could probably squeeze in a 12.5" or 13" screen), but still with quad-core CPUs and 4x TB3 ports. Obviously would also like FaceID and a slimmer chassis with better battery life (hey, it says 'no rules' in the thread title...). Basically the most portable, powerful laptop possible so I could use it anywhere on the go and dock at my desk when home.

The current model is great for me, but I would want MagSafe, a USB-A slot, and maybe a threadripper?

Also: would strongly consider a 14"

  • LTE/5G capability
  • FaceID
  • MicroLED display (high nits but keep 60hz for battery life reasons)
  • Nvidia GPU option
  • Bootcamp drivers which allow graphic switching between iGPU/DGPU
  • Touchbar separate to F keys (make trackpad smaller and bring keyboard down to make space)
Honestly MicroLED displays are many years away, none Even exist at a 16” Size. OLED for example Samsung is making 16” OLED Laptop Displays currently. Hmmmm I wonder why ?

This is why you should have all of your files on an extenral and not on the internal drive.
This is not the right attitude.

Yes I have a time machine back up - but it's a laptop so that's not connected 24/7. Yes I have the whole folder backed up to my iCloud, but that doesn't always sync in real time and I might not always be on WiFi.

Having redundant data backup possibilities is a good thing. Being able to remove the SSD for data recovery purposes is, IMO, a more valuable properly than ensuring my data cannot be accessed in the event my computer is lost or stolen.

But No, please Apple - solder my data to the motherboard and lock it all up under T2 like I'm some high value target in the CIA.

Hardware: 14” laptop with a Surface Book-like detachable screen design. A 4k, OLED, 3:2 aspect ratio screen with thin bezels a la the Dell XPS 13. A best-in-class keyboard a la the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Fast charging a la the Surface Laptop with a MagSafe-like cable. Face ID authentication.

Software: An enhanced version of Mac OS X with the ability to run all iPad and iPhone apps available in the App Store. I’d also like to see Apple deliver new continuity features.

I know this can be a fun exercise, if I were to throw my $.02 in, I'd say the following:

  • 4k display option
  • smaller touchpad (not by much but the current one is way too big)
  • More ports, including SD card reader
  • Drop the Touchbar
  • Glowing Apple logo in the back
  • Sleep indicator light
  • Bong on bootup (yes, I still miss that).
  • RTX Nvidia GPU

I want to make a full list of it would take to make me buy a Mac again. I don't expect perfection because that's not definable. Most of us aren't that small clique of fanatic brainwashed sheep and we just want some long running and current problems to be fixed or stopped.

1. User replaceable memory and storage. There's no excuse not to have this when every other company under the sun offers this. Your richest shareholders shouldn't be pressuring us to buy soldered overpriced memory and storage so they can get even richer. We are all trying really hard to survive and save for our retirement.

2. The boot drive not tied to the SMC/T-chip. If my internal boot drive fails and isn't user replaceable the whole machine is dead meat.

3. Don't manipulate us your customers who pay your salaries to purchase add-ons and upgrades because of quality failures. In other words, don't supply poor quality cables that crack, dissolve and fray within a year just to make us buy new cables. Other manufacturers use high quality plastics for cables that last years or decades. If we are throwing away low quality cables globally it is extremely bad for the soil and the oceans.

4. Likewise don't ship computers with popping crackling speakers with no fix for 18 months and then keep shipping new revisions of the computer with the same problem. If this is to pressure us to buy AirPods we'll just buy Samsung or Sony earphones instead. Or we just refund the machine and buy something else/wait.

5. Don't manipulate us your customers who pay your salaries to update to a new buggy OS just to get new graphics drivers. Catalina is buggy as hell right now but for some users its the only way to get new graphics drivers. Also, why couldn't you release Apple TV, Music and Arcade on Mojave?

6. Following on from that, let us download the latest greatest graphics drivers from AMD and Nvidia. Mac users should have all the same regular driver updates as Windows users.

7. Keyboard paint has been coming off too easily since the first Aluminium PowerBook. Other companies provide keyboards with much more reliable paint. Even your external keyboards have much more reliable paint. I can use an external Apple keyboard for years without issue. Why isn't it possible on the MacBooks?

Just 7 points. Just 7 steps away from making us all happy. It can be done so easily because these 7 points are super easy to implement and can be done within one year.

If I have missed anything guys and girls, add your points below.

I don’t know what would make me super happy but I’m rather happy with what Apple offers right now. Some of the points that you raise (e.g. internal drive security) are core design principles of a modern Mac computer and if that direction is a deal breaker for you, I don’t see much hope for you and the Mac in the future.

At least they braided the power cable on the new Mac Pro. Now they should braid all their power and USB cables that have a very poor low quality record for so many years.

Their USB-C cable is actually quite sturdy. The old MagSafe cables were atrocious though. Anyway, all issues I had with MagSafe, the USB-C charger solves them :)

The cable connection is sturdy. Read my post above about low quality plastics and why we need braided or high quality plastics. Read in detail what I said about all this disintegrating cables and how they are bad for the planet.

Take the outgoing 15" chassis, put the 28W CPU and other internals from the 13" model into it (or even a custom ARM CPU) with the space you've saved* add the new magic keyboard, and an SD card slot, stretch the screen out edge to edge like the iPad Pros, price from around the same $1,799 the almost identical 13" goes for.

*there should be plenty of room as the 15" was already about 0.7mm thicker than the 13" anyway.

Your own fantasies about Apple and those who are happy with its products aren't in any way less delusional than what you imagine applies to others.

1. ProMotion screen with an Anti-Glare option.

2. Socketed SSD and RAM (at the minimum the SSD though)

It’s so so damned frustrating to not be able to shop for a base-ish 16” model and plan to upgrade the storage as I might need to over time with a simple aftermarket NVMe drive - as one can do on the 2015 15” MBP.

By the way - I wouldn’t “like it”, but I’d be ok with even just having the option of buying Apple proprietary aftermarket storage options. The problem I have is just not being able to change the storage, whatsoever, down the line during ownership. These need not be like iPads/iPhones & so sealed up and “permanently in one configuration”. Computers are different than tablets/phones for people and the extra flexibility is a huge reason to have a full blown computer at all (vs tablets/phones).

3. A 15-17” MacBook Air. I’m mainly a desktop user these days, but when on the go, I want and really need a larger screen simply for comfort and aging eyes....but I have ZERO need for a total powerhouse (along with the powerhouse cost) in that larger portable form factor.

4. Make the TouchBar optional (or kill it)

I know about disintegrating MagSafe cables. I haven't heard about a broken USB-C cable yet. Around 20-30% of all MagSafe 2 chargers we have were falling apart after two years. All the USB-C chargers are perfectly fine yet. So as I said before, I consider this issue fixed, braided or not braided.

Magnetically attached USB-C ports. That way everything is effectively connected to a MagSafe port. It is also easier to replace damaged ports.

More rounded edges. There are some very sharp bits where the hands can be.

Electro Luminescent Quantum Dot display (another new technology in the same direction as microLED, but with very pure colours). Note this is a different technology to the Photo Luminescent Quantum Dot displays that are on the market, ELQD is self-emitting.

Retractable legs. Raises the computer to a higher level without carrying around a laptop stand, and allows for more cooling.

The 16" is darned close (and I have a whole bunch of hours on it, it's been my daily driver for three weeks - everything from e-mail to merging a 350 megapixel panorama). If I were dreaming...

Really just two convenience ports - 1 HDMI and 1 standard USB.

Do you use an external monitor with it?

Yes -the internal display is pretty good, but nothing beats an Eizo for photo editing!
