So a few days ago my MBP suddenly had a beach ball problem where after every click it would go to the beach ball for 30+ seconds. Shut downs and start ups also took ridiculously long.

Once I removed the SSD and placed it into an external USB hard drive enclosure, everything went back to normal. No more beach balls!!! Do I just need a new hard drive cable or is this problem caused by something else?

Edit* Before moving the SSD to my external enclosure, I tried to reinstall OSX with the SSD still in it's original internal bay and it said it was going to take 4000+ hours to finish the install

I thought it was maybe a hard drive or OSX problem so I reinstalled OSX but that solved nothing and the beach balls were still present. Im not sure, try testing it with a new cable and if the problem persists its the hard drive. Nice knowing people using SSD instead of HDD.

If it was a hard drive problem though, wouldn't I still have the beach ball problem when I moved the SSD to the external usb enclosure?

IMHO (and going by a lot of other similar threads) the cable is a simple thing to try. Could help, and cheaper than any other piece of hardware.
(that's 3 opinions at once, by my count :D )

Try the cable...
