ok. so my teacher gave an assignment that she told us that no one can get.

she gave everyone a picture of a building, and then said we wouldn't be able to identify it in 48 hours. she said it's like bird watching, if you don't know what bird it is, you have to spend hours reading thru a book until you see it.

well i have a picture, and while i will still be trying to find it, if anyone knows, please let me know. the more eyes that see it give me an edge!!:p

You might want to try posting it over at skyscrapercity.com.

what is the point of this assignment? sounds like a waste of time to me. if she says you're not going to get it, why bother giving it to you?

i have no idea what that building is.

wow i wish i had more teachers that gave me assignments that they knew I couldn't complete. That would mean that I wouldn't have to do it at all.

"So did anybody complete the impossible assignment? No? Oh that's okay, I'll tell you the answers."

"Sweet"

I'm guessing that it's probably quite a famous building, that you could probably recognise fairly easily from a side-on angle – the point of the exercise being to illustrate the importance of looking at familiar things from different points of view, or some other rubbish like that. ;)

Sorry wyatt23 – I don't recognise the building either.

It kinda looks like a building that I tried to take a picture of in NYC. Some security guy yelled at me. I took the picture anyways. I think it was a bank, I don't remember. It's probably not even that buildiing, there are so damn many.

EDIT:
Nevermind, I found the picture, it's nothin like it.

you could give it to the csi people and they could use their "image enhancers" and zoom in for ever without losing quality...
Yep, I used this method to zoom into one of the windows where a woman was opening her mail and was able to read the address on one of the envelopes...

...just kidding. :p

Good luck identifying a random building based solely on a picture with very few clues as to what/where it could be.

looks art deco...Chrysler Building maybe?

EDIT: could be the Empire State Building...I'm thinking that terraced building on the left side of the photo may hold a clue...

No, not Chrysler, but it looks to me a modern version of deco. I'd guess no more than a decade old - though his deco is very good, even includes the twin tower look and set-back facade with a lot of verticals.

When I first saw the pic, I though that it looks like a building I've seen in Chicago near the Hancock building on Oak street.

I thought that at first, but I found this image of the Empire State that made me think otherwise...

yea...the windows are wrong...

all I can say is there better be an answer on this thread eventually :D

EDIT: is it me, or does the thing look like it might be residential, like an apartment building or a hotel? I'd say the two columns of windows that join at a 45º angle are elevator shafts...well...maybe

Right. Learning to look, and learning to be attentive to text, image and world.

Also learning to research and to problem solve, using resources at hand to develop innovative solutions.

Good assignment so long as everyone has to make a guess.

And write about it.

They look way too wide to be elevators to me – I'm in agreement that it has the look of a residential building though, and the banners are the sort of thing you might see on a hotel.

Of course, I could be hopelessly wrong on all counts. :p

It won't be an elevator... the upper portion of the building is recessed a bit from the lower portion so unless the elevator travels horizontal at the the recess point it wont work.

Definately agree with the residential/hotel angle. Those windows would be like that to get you wider view.

It would be useful to know where the submitter lives..country wise as that would help narrow the possibilities a little.

I'd agree with this. Getting the 'right answer' is less important than the process you go through to get there. Sounds like proper education for a change!
