Which is why you get people to phone in: stops enormous volumes of people automatically voting for Rick Astley (for example) and means the people who ring in are more likely to actually want that song to players. It also means you can get someone asking for the reason they want their song to play. For a tech company, this is a nice shout out to this being a live, personal thing, rather than a computer algorithm.

It's not a voting contest, so a thousand people asking for Rick Astley will never happen. Phone calls are the same thing. They probably take a bunch asking for requests, and when one comes up that they are going to play, they use that sound bite.

Call? Why not just carrier pigeon? Not that it really matters but one would think Apple would have a more technologically advanced method of requesting a song.
One part of it is so that they can likely play the actual recorded request on the air before playing the song. One of the most straightforward ways to have that available is by having people call and leave a message with their request.

Song requests are total bull****. There's probably a million people requesting songs, they just find someone who happened to request the next song they're playing and pretend someone requested it.
It works for them as they get to put something extra on the air other than just them talking and playing music. Gives it more of "radio" feel and provides some ways to fill up their constant 24/7 programming.

Kinda pointless since its a worldwide station....it'll take forever to actually have your requested song played on Beats 1.... your gonna be battling to have your song queued with thousands of beiber and one direction fans..

pretty much any service that takes requests. you'll hear it. eventually. as if you didn't request it at all.

Lol the request section was by far the weakest. Give me what one expert likes before thousands of regular people, it's the Apple way.

Song requests?! Why wouldn't I just immediately stream what I am wanting to hear? Why would I call in, wait for someone to pick up, make my request, and then sit around and hope they play my request? This is 2015, not 1955.
They didn't really think this one through.
Don't you want other people to enjoy your taste in music?

Phoning these things is a great idea and contrary to what some posters think, it really shows that they have thought this through.

Online voting would get swamped with beliebers, vandalised by 4chan, and exploited by businessmen. Have we not been paying attention to the internet? Pretty much every little thing gets abused and gamed.

They don't need an open voting system. There are already charts and analytics that prove what people are really into. This lets DJs select a good request paired with a good choice of song. It lets them ignore the ignorant or manipulative masses and go with what the station needs to entertain its demographic. And it lets people select a song for someone else - shame so many other posters seem so ignorant of human interaction. You don't request a song on the radio because you want to hear it! You request a song so other people will hear it, and hear a little bit about you or your friends or family. You request a song for your girlfriend who's overseas, or your mum who's having an operation. Quit thinking about yourself and your 'devices' for a second.

welcome to 2015 , welcome to the future, welcome to how the world works these days.

Can I suggest 'welcome to the 'Charting Now' featured station?' If all you want to do is follow the crowd...

Just laughing at all the people who don't get it. Apple did good here.

People just wanna hide lazily behind a computer nowadays.

Thank God they added a radio
Human element.

One of the upcoming segments on Beats 1 radio is called "Requests," and it appears this broadcast will feature songs that have been requested from Beats 1 listeners around the world. According to a tweet from the Beats 1 Twitter account, users can request a song by calling in to the station.

The Apple Music Tumblr site has a page that's dedicated to requests, listing phone numbers around the world for listeners to call to request a song. In the United States, the number for making a request is 1-310-299-8756, or 1-877-720-6293 for toll free.

There are also phone numbers listed for Canada, the U.K., France, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Australia, Italy, Ireland, and New Zealand.

"Requests" will play at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, and the segment will be hosted by Travis Mills, who is located in Los Angeles. Mills' show will come on following Ebro Darden, who goes live at 3 p.m. Pacific Time. It is not clear if the requests that Beats 1 is asking for will be limited to the "Requests" segment or if they'll also be played at other times on Beats 1 radio.

Beats 1 radio debuted today at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time in hundreds of countries around the world. It provides 24/7 live music and will also include news segments, interviews, and more. Beats 1 radio is part of Apple Music, which also includes a new on-demand streaming service (free for three months) and Apple Music Connect, Apple's new artist-focused social networking feature.

I just want to remove or hide the Beats1 station.

I think the attraction for people who do this is more about getting your favorite song out to a global audience, both in terms of exposing people to something you like, and also just to feel like you got your literal five minutes.
One of my best memories was driving back from our farm in like '92...pretty sure I was 10. We stopped at a diner and used a pay phone to request Michael Jackson's Rockin Robin. We listened to the radio station for nearly two hours before the song came on and we got our shout out. I don't know if I've ever sung so loud.
Waiting: not necessarily a bad thing.
