I recently got a pair of Beats studio wireless headphones. When I connect via BT to my iPhone 6 iOS 9.1 the screen activates but it does not start the music app. When I plug in any headphones it brings up the music app so I can just hit the Play button.

    Is bluetooth connection different?

I have a pair of Powerbeats Bluetooth headphones and when I connect them via BT the Music app doesn't automatically start, I have to either launch it from the home screen or swipe up and launch it from Control Centre (to resume what I was playing previously).

Also - connecting the headphone via BT and then pressing the "middle" button on the headphones used to resume the Music app, although this only worked if music had been played (if, for example, you'd been watching a YouTube video via their app, it wouldn't work) however, this functionality has been broken since iOS 9 for me...

Thanks for the response. I would have thought Apple could notice the BT device being connected. For example, looking at the named device like Beats Studio Wireless vs. a non-audio device it would connect just like when plugged into the audio jack. Well maybe they will in the future.

You can change the name of bluetooth devices. Headphones are not the only decides that can connect via car. It is pretty much impossible for apple to know that you have specifically connected a pair of headphones. You have cars, bluetooth head sets for calls, accessories, ect that can connect and none of these need the music app to be launched.

This is true. Just would be a great way to start the music app when its not running.

Auto play (play on connect) has to be enabled by the vendor as it is an option to third parties

The phone should know that the connected device is a pair of headphones. When I connect my Square reader to my phone the music app will launch.

Yes I would hope so, but it does not for me. The lock screen appears but no music controls like when a wired pair in plugged in.

Hmm, I just noticed this behavior on my iPhone 6s+, 9.1:
Listening to Google Play Music with Beats Studio Wireless.
Turned off headphones to work on something.
When I turn them back on, and press play, it starts the Apple Music app.

I have Jabra move wireless, and it works as expected: the music icon appears when headphone connected.

Like when you plug in wired headphones? Does the music controls show at the top on the lock screen?

So this morning I connected BT to my iPhone and the music controls came up on the lock screen. Maybe its like the learning for traffic in the notification center. Go figure.
