Forget hiring Jimmy Iovine as a special advisor. Apple should hire all these keyboard CEO's and multi-billion dollars business owners that post on Macrumors who know what's best for Apple.

Apple is not full of stupid people. There must be a good reason for this whole deal to be going through. Without knowing all the facts we can just but guess...

Well, Apple has at least 1 stupid person, Eddie Cue. His relentless failings extends to iTunes with its antiquated business model. This forces Apple to make a bad, expensive deal to try and get back in the game.

Thanks, Eddie.

Hate to say it but they know how to trick people into buying overpriced stuff. I'm not saying their headphones are "bad" just worth about half as much as they sell for. I guess tactics like that would be valuable to any company.

The technology maybe. But I'd be very surprised if they acquired the licensing deals as part of the acquisition. The labels weild too much control to allow that to happen.

Edit: I think the only situation where the labels would allow their content to included in the valuation of a deal is if they had a piece of the business. That has happened in the past, but I don't believe they have a stake in the Beats business?

Maybe that's where Jimmy Iovine comes in. Maybe he made it happen.

Apple has been trying to get into the on demand streaming service game for years. The labels are terrified of iTunes so they won't give them reasonable terms. If I recall correctly, Apple is already paying labels SIGNIFICANTLY more than Pandora for iTunes Radio.

Dr. Dre pocketed about $100 million on the HTC deal, I can only imagine what he'll get out of this one.

"Beats Electronics received a $500 million investment from Carlyle Group in September that valued the company at over $1 billion.

Beats also bought back in September a 24.84 percent stake held by Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp."

Looks like he bought it back..

My guess is what a couple others have said. Apple is spending $3B for music streaming contracts.

In addition to headphone's that can be made different and marketed differently.

Tim Cook is slowly killing Apple. What Ballmer did to Microsoft, that's exactly what Cook's gonna do to Apple in 5 years. Just watch. The man has no vision and is easily swayed by these BS artists.

Started with axing Forstall. That guy was one in a million. Then continued with giving Ive autocratic power which led to aesthetically god-awful iOS Hello Kitty and the 5c.

It's pretty obvious. Beats must have negotiated a stellar subscription music deal with the record labels (possibly thanks to this dude's contacts in the industry). Apple wants to quickly jump on that ship, so they're snapping up the deals Beats has already signed.

My guess as well. Jimmy is well connected. If this does go through I'm sure it will give Apple more leverage in negotiations. They'll make it back in a quarter or two.

Just look at APPL PE ratio: it's at 14 , MSFT is at 14, Facebook is at 71 and Google is at 27. That gives you an indication of what people think future holds for these companies. Apple will follow Microsoft into being an old dying irrelevant giant.

Wait, so Facebook is going to be the "it" tech company and Apple will become irrelevant? But you left out Amazon. Their PE is 448. Does that mean Amazon will be bigger and more innovative than all those companies combined?

Apple's most prudent acquisition was NEXT. 429 million, 1.5 million shares at $5.88 per share.

No doubt that is a big part of it.

There is a market shift happening in headphones from small in-ear to large on-ear or over-ear models. It is very likely that Apple wants to get in on this and purchase the most popular headset on the market among kids and young adults.

Couldn't agree with you more! Forstall was Jobs' successor and Cook took first chance to can him. Forstall should be running Apple, not Cook. Cook has no vision. He's just a business guy like Ballmer.

Maybe after this fiasco and mockery, Apple's board will come to its senses and fire that old fool. For two years Cook has sat on Apple's TV project that Jobs said he "cracked" and have been polishing those small screen phones while Android has been growing like weed.

Apple has truly lost its way and Tim Cook is to blame.

An odd purchase. Music deals/contracts can be canceled or not renewed, as they most likely will be now that Apple is buying Beats.

Amazon's a monopoly. They sell things at really small margins so they can maintain their monopoly and kill off competition. Nobody will ever take down Amazon. Apple, on the other hand, is a hits company. All Apple has to do is make few lemons, few product slip-ups, and their stock will drop 20-30%.

That's why Amazon's P/E is so high.

Something tells me the shareholders will disagree with you. Besides, Jobs specifically told Cook to never question "what would Jobs do?" Let the man stand on his own two feet for at least five years and then if Apple has nothing to show for themselves then go buy some stock and vote him down. Until then, let the man do his job.

Did you see the board(s) Jimmy Iovine is on? Some how I think paying him a pretty large salary will ensure these contracts are not canceled.

Tim Cook is going to make Apple even more profitable, start moving it toward a longer term strategy, and will generally be good for the company in just about every way that isn't publicity? I can't see how that's something people wouldn't want.

This is just wrong.
Why do I think Cook is no Jobs :-(
Steve had way more class than this.

Because he isn't.

Nobody is Steve Jobs anymore, he was different. There will never be anybody just like him . It's time we moved on from this hero worship, maybe tried reality.

ITT: people who have no clue who Jimmy Iovine is, but are commenting negatively anyway.

Had Steve listened to Iovine in the first place, Tim wouldn't need to be buying Beats to compete with Spotify. Iovine is a genius who predicted over a decade ago that the streaming model would win out. Seems like a smart guy given the landscape of music today.

Oh, and he's produced so many artists and hits over the past 40 years that it is easier to list the people he hasn't worked with at this point.

That mindless hivemind hate for a brand that you are all being blinded by is exactly how people outside of these forums perceive Apple. Welcome to your own nightmare.
