Did you guys not see my previous post?

It actually still works. I returned my black iphone 3g from the AT&T store because I wanted to get a white one from Apple since they have unlimited stock. Once the return was finished I was back to my old upgrade date, meaning I was no longer eligible. I called the store again and they asked for the IMEI of the 1st gen iphone and once that was put back in the system my status changed back to upgrade eligible. Try it out there's no harm in trying.

You had a store put it in the system. Meaning you didn't become eligible by connecting to iTunes and activating the phone.

My friend tried it right in front of my face and it still showing:

"You can take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option, with the exception of iPhone which requires a 2-year commitment. This line may be eligible for an equipment discount on 07/30/2009 More Details "

but his data plan has changed to 'IPHONE DATA + 200'.

I just picked up a 16GB 3G iPhone for my work account and swapped (activated) the old 1st gen 4GB iPhone on my personal account. It did not change my eligibility. I will check again tomorrow.

Now I need to find a holster that fits 2 iPhones, a bluetooth headset and my earphones ... that should be easy to find!

UPDATE; I checked this morning and it still lists my original eligibility date .... I will check again on Monday in case they don't process these things on the weekend.

Well I never connected an iPhone to iTunes because I don't own an original iPhone. I just asked for my friends IMEI# and called 611 and asked them to update my phone. Once they added it in the system then the eligibility changed and that's how I was able to get the black iPhone 3g. When I returned it to the ATT store I checked online and my eligibility changed back to uneligible until October of 2008. As I was standing in line at an apple store, two days after July 11th, I called the ATT store to add back the original iPhone IMEI and once they did the eligibility changed back to upgrade eligible. This way worked after July 11th and that's all I'm saying.

As of Monday morning, my eligibility date is still 11/09/08 ... I think the window of opportunity for this method of getting an early subsidized upgrade has passed.

I know this is late but I have been in Canada until yesterday so today was my first chance to test this out. On July 10th I activated and iphone. My eligibility online never changed. In fact i never really knew what was going on. It would always say "sorry, you are not eligible to upgrade online at this time. Please call . . ." but it never gave a date that I would be eligible. I figured that this must have something to do with the fact that i have a "Business account" It isnt through a company or anything. The account is in my name and just me and my wifes lines. We just get 15% discount through our University.
Anyway, I just went into a ATT store this afternoon. Told them I wanted an iphone. They got my number, Drivers licensce, ran it, charged me $199 +tax. My new 8GB phone should be here in 1-2 weeks!
I am happy.

Quick Little Scenario, If have a 1st gen iphone, and i go in the store and upgrade for the discounted pricing, i could then give my wife my old 1st gen iphone, then have her put her sim, activate on itunes, and then the next day have her go down to apple and upgrade to the 3g at the subsidized pricing, assuming that activating the first gen iphone would make her eligible?

The answer is no, unless she was already eligible. I had a 1st Gen for a work phone and upgraded that to a 3G. I then moved my SIM from my personal phone (an 8525) to the 1st Gen and activated it. My upgrade eligibility is still 11/19/2008.

I think this only worked if you did it before the launch ... July 10th or so. :(

Could i upgrade, take my sim out and give her the iphone 3g and have her activate it, then put my sim back into my original iphone and reactivate it that way she gets the iphone 3g?

I think the only way it worked was if an account was configured for a 1st Gen iPhone prior to the launch date of 7/11. AT&T changed the rules just prior 7/11 to allow 1st Gen phones to be activated with a SIM other than one that the phone shipped with. (Prior to this, the 1st Gen phones were locked to SIM they were shipped with.)

At this point, all 1st Gen phones that are activated appear to AT&T as phones that are being reused on other accounts. To my knowledge, there is no way to "fake" AT&T into thinking that a newly activated 1st Gen iPhone is an original activation (pre 7/11).

Now, as to activating a 3G iPhone with someone else's SIM ... I have no clue. Currently, the 3G iPhones are activated at the store. While the box comes with a SIM removal tool, I have not tried to swap SIMs with any of my other AT&T phones.

Is this the end?

Is this the end of the rumors and hopes of getting the iphone at a reasonable price?

I was gonna get the original iphone, but hated the edge network, so i decided to wait for the 3g iphone, and got a cheap crap free phone in the meantime.... thinking there would never be a subsidy.

So is this cheap POS phone really going to keep me from getting my beloved iphone till august 09?

Has no one figured a way to get around this (post july 11th)? Is there someone in customer service that has the ability to change upgrade eligibility?

I suppose, that an your own cheapness. But hey, each month you go without paying the $30 data plan is 1/6th of the way towards that $200 price hike for already having a subsidized phone!
