If you have a Leopard upgrade disc you will have to install Tiger first.

alright, installed the first disc.... shouldn't it prompt me to insert the second? it doesn't. inserted the second, a DOS looking screen comes up and tells me to restart. it keeps telling me to do that with the second disc.

If you have a Leopard upgrade disc you will have to install Tiger first.

Update with CCC

So I am a little confused about your set up and I apologize for not being able to follow up with the question you asked me in a more timely manner, but here is an idea.

You have the drive that is currently in the laptop and then you have an external drive, and you also have the new drive which you just want to put in the computer? I think that is correct.

What I would do is put the drive that you want to be the "new" laptop drive in the enclosure. (if you don't want to take the one that came with the enclosure out you can order online or pick one up at your local staples or whatever for cheap)

Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the current drive that is in the laptop onto the drive in the encloser (this should be your new drive).

Then when CCC has finished take the "new" drive out of the encloser and switch it with the "old" on that is currently in the laptop.

The computer should boot fine and you will now have a larger hard drive.

This is by far the easier way I have swapped drives, but does require an enclosure. On the plus side you can do what I did, which is use my "old" drive as an external drive to.

Hope this helps. To me it seems much easier than messing with time machine and the install disks.

unfortunately, i already did the swap. does best buy or someplace like that sell an enclosure?
but yes, i have the 120gb drive that came in the computer, a 300gb external hard drive, and the new 320gb drive that i installed in the computer.

Best buy may or may not have them, it has been hit or miss in my experience. If you are able to get an enclosure it really it quite easy to copy and then swap the drives.

Good Luck!

FINALLY got everything figured out. talk about stressful. but it was a learning experience.

it looks like there were a few problems. one, i needed to format the new drive. then i found this write up and the stupid 'back' option he mentions took care of not showing my external drive.

How do you clone your HD before using CCC?

I have an external HD that I se for my mac and PC. I've downloaded CCC, but the external hd is greyed out. I checked the help forum for CCC and it says I have to format the HD. Is this true?

What should I do? I am trying to upgrade to Leopard and others have suggested to do a clean install.

Just my two cents, but I highly recommend Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC). Simply clone your drive, using CCC, then install it in the computer and it should boot.

This way you have your original drive image, and the new one, so you can make sure it is all working before you reformat your OLD drive.

I would still recommend doing a backup before you use CCC just to be safe.

I used CCC when upgrading my drive in my laptop and it worked flawlessly!
