That is not "True" Dark mode. Sorry, but I do not accept that as being the dark mode everyone wanted. Switch it on and look at the App Dock in Messages. Colors are still off, look at your battery meter and the toggle. Its inverted colors.
Yes it provides are dark layout for stock apps and it doesn't mess up images, but its not what everyone really wanted.

This is not dark mode. This is for accessibility. Please don't confuse the two.
It's something, I bet this is to lower the ranting when True Dark Mode is an iPhone Edition exclusive.

You hit the nail on the head. True dark mode only makes sense with an OLED display but people will complain. So for those that really wanted a darker layout, this will suffice, even though its not perfect.
Those that get an iPhone 8 will get a true dark layout experience.
That's just inverted colors not even close to a dark mode.

IPS is more power efficient and works better with light colored layouts.

It is absolutely positively not dark mode. Nowhere close.
And for those saying it's useless without an OLED display, that's a cop-out. Maybe some people would like to see a black theme rather than a predominantly white one? It doesn't always have to pertain to power savings or whatever else. It would particularly be nice for those of us with black phones. I'm mainly irked by the lack of inclusion of a dark mode this time around because it would take Apple all of 3 seconds to add the feature.

What did you expect? It inverts the UI colours and ignores images, videos, etc. If it wasn't for the icons or some elements (such as iMessage bubbles), this would be the real thing...

This feature will also allow app makers who have their own dark mode to hook it so that it will just show their app dark mode... Apple has made a dark mode for some of its apps and this hooks them. I expect that it will get much better on the built-in apps before the end of the beta
Why would it be improved? Its not dark mode. Someone posted a screenshot in the bug fix thread, all the app icons are inverted in settings, as inverted colors is suppose to do.
This is actually great. I use inverted colors every night and my only complaint is that images appear inverted as well.

sure its not a proper dark theme or dark mode (which will likely come with the OLED iPhone) but it is "something" that offers a darker look that looks great with black faced iPhones when some apps are opened, that is better than the original inverted colours (that inverted every single colour)...this is as close to a "dark theme" as we will see at least until the OLED iPhone likely comes with one.
iOS 11 has many, many betas to go through until launch.

Hmm I had dark mode when I was jailbroken and didn't see any difference as far as battery life.
As in dark mode would actually have some positive battery life implications when it comes to OLED screens, but wouldn't have any effect really one way or another when it comes to IPS ones.
If that's the case it would be silly to be an iPhone 8 exclusive.
I personally don't even think it's coming at all.
Well, it would make more sense for it to be introduced with iPhone 8 if it uses OLED screen technology. As an exclusive, that's a somewhat different question, and might be more for differentiation/marketing type of reasons if that's the case.

The “Smart invert” is NOT just the standard invert colors so if you guys haven’t used it, don’t dismiss it. It’s more than just inverting colors. It’s not Dark Mode but it’s as close as we’ll get prior to the next iPhone (maybe).

Yeah by no means is it perfect but it’s better than just inverting colors like some who haven’t used it are stating
They need some software feature to introduce with the new hardware. Every year, they save one thing for the latest iPhones whether it needed new hardware or not.
