I just bought a second hand Canon D40 with a EFS 17-85mm IS USM lens!
Very nice camera and i'm excited to get to know it.

Does somebody know a good book on photography for beginners?

I'd recommend "Learning to see creatively" and "Digital Art Photography for Dummies". Don't knock that second one, it's actually pretty amazing ;)

Also might want to try the how-to section of the forums at dgrin.com. Pretty incredible.

I'd highly recommend reading Understanding Exposure.

Another vote for Understanding Exposure. Explains the concepts really well, with nice pictures to reflect what is being talked about. Excellent book for starting out!

If you're in Amsterdam, you've got some beautiful places to shoot. I would be cool if you could shoot a little and post some images here. :)
