Hey shush, this "top of the class" English student likes to relax in forums because using proper grammar is exhausting enough during school hours!

to the OP: Three words... print on demand.

I didnt say I was in the top of the class, but I am in the top class/set (there are 3, low, middle and top).

Yeah, I only like to relax while writing on forums.

Hmm... Print on demand looks interesting.

Aside from getting yourself an editor, you need to find a few people you can trust to read your work before you submit it to publishers, and who you can trust to give you the most brutally blunt feedback possible. If you suspect one of them of sparing your feelings, fire him (figuratively) and find another. You don't want anyone who will coddle you because of your age or because of any personal fondness for you. Should it be the case that you are not quite so precocious a writer as you might hope, you want somebody to tell you that honestly, and you need to be able to take that feedback constructively to refine your own work.

I am gonna get my mum to do it, I know if I tell her to tell me the proper truth she will.

OK, I'll bare that in mind. Thanks!

If you want a bit of personal advice, I suggest you wait until your first semester of college. I know that sounds a bit extreme (I have no idea how old you are), but in college you're likely to meet at least a few professors and/or GSIs that would be willing to read work for you (assuming you develop a rapport).

GSIs/professors are generally much more intouch with the publishing industry and will be more honest when your work falls short.

Just an idea. :)

And for the record, I have a few ideas I'd like to get published as well, so I'll be eager to see any developments you might post in this thread in the future. ;) :)

Well I will start now so by then I should be really good, practice makes perfect. I am 13 BTW!

I will post developments in this thread if you are interested! :)

To start that, I asked Sapphire Blue Publishing if they would be interested in my book idea and they e-mailed me this:

Josh:

Thanks for your enquiry.

We do accept science-fiction, which it sounds like your manuscript is, and we are also open to first-time authors.

Please send your writing resume and an excerpt of your work (5-10 pages), with a synopsis if you have one, to this address.

You can reference the Submissions page on our website for more information on submitting work.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

I replyed with the following

Thank you for the reply.

I am still writing the book, I have only just started but I wanted to check out publication.

When my book is done I will send you the requested details, or when I get 5 chapters done if you want to look sooner.

Thank you for your interest!

I know a few authors - none of whom were actually picked up by a publisher. It's not an easy business for unknown authors, so don't get your hopes up.

They wound up publishing the book themselves, on their own dime; which appears to be a growing trend. It made no difference to them... they were still proud.

Some time in the future, I hope to self-publish my own little book of short stories that I've been collecting over the years, either in print or on the web (PDF/Kindle purchase, etc.).

13!?!

That changes a few things mon ami. ;)

I don't mean any offense, but I hope you realize that at your age any novel, whether sci fi or not, will be difficult to complete.

I think, however, that your age can give you a great advantage. Over the summers and various school holidays you have, write portions of your story and make sure that character development and plot devices are functioning well. By the time you turn 18, you should have a much more carefully crafted work than if you had rushed into writing your novel. This will also give you time to learn more about the publishing industry, seek out valuable contacts (again, I stress college professors), and be in a much better position.

Just don't loose sight of the fact that the quality of the product, not how quickly it was made, should be your greatest consideration. ;):)
I will post developments in this thread if you are interested! :)

Good to know. :)
