Actually, probably what happened is that some poor warehouse rep was scanning in devices and got an iPhone 5 return mixed up with an iPhone 6 return. So it's good that the OP sent the iPhone 5 back because someone else is probably being told that his device was never sent back (or that he sent back a 6, lol).

Yes, we were just speculating why someone might swap it out if it was in fact an act of theft, not what actually happened with the OP.

I sent the iPhone 5 back. Also, they concluded it was Apple's fault. When they phones were taken out of the boxes they mixed them up. All is good now and hopefully by returning the iPhone 5 I saved someone else this same trouble. Horrible experience.

Glad it was sorted. Sorry you had the experience.

Want to hear the best part? I was told by Apple that I wouldn't have to pay any taxes or brokerage fees if I went and picked up the phone because they would charged and not me. This wasn't the case. Fedex confirmed that the fees would be charged to me because that's what was Apple's request. There hasn't been one speck of truth from Apple throughout this whole process.

I hope you didn't bother with going down to FedEx to pick up the 5. Just let FedEx deal with it.

They can't charge you for something you didn't pick up, especially if you didn't have any say in the actual shipping of the package.

My phone magically turned up today at Apple..... They also said that the iPhone 5 is not on my account and if Fedex can't ship it back I can just pick it up and keep it. What do you think I should do? Send it back and do a good deed?

You have to ask strangers if you should do the right thing? What sort of person are you ?

Recently when I got my iPad Air 2 delivered to me, the UPS guy said "Enjoy your new iPad" so they know exactly whats in what boxes.

Working long enough, the guys know exactly whats in what box and where its going or coming from.

I found that a bit strange.

I find it strange that Apple ships iPhones with the IMEI, serial number and model number right on the outside of the brown box (sticker). I personally don't want anyone seeing the IMEI or even that it's an iPhone that I purchased.
