Proper replacement? eBay keyboards are not proper. They don't work for a start. That site you linked me to doesn't guarantee Apple genuine parts any more than the eBay ads that trick people into the same thing.. Hence when you directly ask them you get no reply. That's also a US site meaning import taxes and how many weeks for economy delivery? Get real. I need my device every day. Certainly no more than a few days offline.

Just realised you weren't referring to me about the broken keys but I think it still sums up my experience:
Broke it? What would I achieve by breaking it? If my intention from the start was to sell the machine I'd have sold it fully working. Not with a faulty keyboard. And even after the physical keys FALLING OFF FROM USE , which, I fixed by replacing and putting a silicone cover on the board that worked fine.. An ELECTRICAL FAULT developed where rows of keys cut out. I'd expect Apple - a great company - to produce a Pro level product that can withstand intensive use in regards for typing for at least 5 years before throwing in the towel. Lenovo certainly see this as a priority.

But at the end of the day when these problems develop you can fix them right? Well, not really. Apple don't let me buy the parts from them. Who knows if your random internet link is really genuine? I've wasted so much time and cash on this already so whilst I appreciate your opinion I don't get your criticism on how it was dealt with.

There are other options. Like replacing the keys and keeping the functional keyboard.

http://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/2010-apple-macbook-pro-laptop-keyboard-key-unibody/

It isn't inexpensive but you can replace any key including the key cap, hinge and cup for pretty much any model MacBook for $4.95 per key.

I personally still don't see a problem with buying a used part from a seller on eBay. The part may be old but if it isn't as listed you can get a full refund without even having to ship the item back. Then throw the defective one in the garbage so no one else ends up with it.

The site explicitly guarantee genuine Apple parts, manufactured by Apple. It's very clear. They ship to the UK via FedEx. You seem to exhibit a tendency to quick judgment that may not serve you well in this context.

There was no functional keyboard.. The eBay ones never worked properly. The original eventually stopped functioning on set rows.

Yes, I did physically fix the keys.. This is unreal. I literally explained all of this.

Three eBay keyboards in a row and not one of them worked!! Different sellers too.

That sounds like the connector on the logic board. I strongly doubt it was the keyboard itself. It's unusual for the connector to stop working but they are fragile.

All you've done in this thread is argue with people who aren't on board with your Apple-bashing, and who have presented you with multiple solutions that you could have used rather than throwing a tantrum and selling the MacBook in a fit.

Your story hasn't been consistent either - First it was a 2014, then a 2012, then it was one eBay keyboard, then two, now three. Between that and the sheer unwillingness to even consider options, along with persisting to come here and perpetuate the argument? I'm betting this is a troll thread.

Pardon me for not believing it because the keyboards on eBay make the same claims.

Perhaps if I had that link about a week ago it'd be a different story.

I've made £400 so far from the MacBook Pro parts. The unibody and charger and battery are all that's left. I've also retained my Corsair RAM and 1TB hybrid drive. eBay and PayPal fees take their toll. Plus postage.

By the end of the year I'll have £800 for another computer all being well. Not sure if I'll be able to afford any Mac by then as the Air will be axed and I can't see the MB reducing to that price. Or if I like it.

Until then I'll be living off of an iPad Air from my dad. Hoping I like it and by December the iPad Pro will be suitable as my next computer due to the pricing to be honest.

Definitely not tolerating Windows 10. More than likely won't be able to afford a Mac .. Let along Apple care which would certainly be mandatory on any future main device of mine.

I wish it was a troll thread. I'll prove what I'm saying I'm actually doing with photos.

It was always a Mid-2012 SPEC MacBook Pro bought in 2014. The whole story has been developing over the days too that's why keyboard story keeps expanding.

I appreciate that some people recommend eBay keyboards.. But they don't seem to recognise the actual inconvenience this has caused! Three times.

I'm a huge Apple fan. My irate perspective on this comes from genuine disappointment at Apple. And the fact I don't like Windows!

Swear to God I'm contemplating Linux

I never considered this. But what options did I have to fix that? Seems nobody could fix a logic board connector affordable
[doublepost=1490037765][/doublepost]The parts sitting out to be sold and also I tried an external keyboard but for some reason the system was extremely slow and I had no idea why. Decided screw this. Time to move on.

If it's any consolation, I believe you. And since I have such high status on this internet forum, that means something! ;) (that is bleeding sarcasm for anyone who needs me to spell it out!) Regardless, MBP in question is gone, a suspect decision or two, you are probably doing the right thing to move on and try new options, as painful as they may turn out. I don't see your thread as bashing, just very specific on why this experience sucked. Not just you, but I think it's time that this thread moved on too! IMHO. Good luck dude. Maybe Macbook in your future, but maybe not.

If that was the issue then yeah the best bet would be to part the machine, sell it as a mechanics special and move on from that one.

Now if you had the knowledge and tools you could repair the motherboard thats another story. Me personally, I don't have that kind of expertise. :D

Since you don't seem to need too much performance from trying out the low end windows laptop and considering the iPad I suggest you look at a MacBook Air.

There are a number of 13" MacBook Airs that are refurbished and come with a year warranty. You can also purchase Apple Care for them and extend the warranty to three years for an additional charge.

Definitely not skilled enough for logic board repairs! Lol

A refurb MacBook Air sounds good. It's just the display then that's the issue for me. Just given its 2017 and a 2010 screen for the next few year sort of sucks. For a new investment anyway.

I'm really hoping the iPad can do a good job. Then I can get a dependable, well built product within my price range.

Swappa is always an option as well. Used MacBook Airs and Pros can be had cheap, and I've had good luck there.

That is true I hadn't really thought about the display.

If your budget is in the $1100 range you could swing a MacBook. http://www.apple.com/shop/product/F...Book-11GHz-Dual-core-Intel-Core-m3-Space-Gray

Apple also has refurbished iPad Pro's for sale too. Incidentally all of these iPads are less expensive then the MacBook listed above. http://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad/ipad_pro

There is not much available refurbished for the 9.7" iPad Pro unless you can scratch by with 32GB of storage. I would not suggest getting a device with that little storage to use as a machine for school.

I'm a bit concerned the Air won't be for sale at all, even as a refurb by December time. That's when I'd have enough saved. Though it's a great choice.

Right now I'm typing on a 2012 iPad mini and it's very slow. But in all honesty it is serving me well. At the end of the week the iPad Air will be posted to me, should be a big performance jump. If that does me well from now until December I think by then I'll know whether or not I can stick an iPad as main computer.

Is that the first generation iPad Mini? I have that one. I purchased my MacBook Pro in my signature to replace it although at some point I might purchase another iPad. Maybe the rumored iPad Pro 2 13" WIFI model.

It's hard to say what will be available at the end of the year. One thing is for sure you will be able to get a model on sale at Best Buy for a few hundred off if you want new or whatever equivalent store exists in the UK. There will always be something on Apple's refurbished store to pick from. :)

The eBay sellers claim outright that they are selling parts manufactured by Apple? That's not what you said before. You said they refuse to say. The website linked to earlier does say in the plainest possible language.

I've tried two eBay new keyboards but both have failed to work

Hi SB-MBP, It looks more like the logic board's keyboard connector has failed, and you mistakenly blamed the eBay sellers for this problem (just doubt that two different sellers had a bad product, thats a very low probablity...) In any case, you could just get some kind of a super flexible rubber USB keyboard like this one:

109-Keys-USB-Silicone-Rubber-Waterproof-Flexible-Foldable-Keyboard-For-PC-Black.jpg_220x220.jpg

Super cheap (just $6 with free shipping) and should minimize your inconvenience because its flexible and really portable

On their listings they show 'Apple OEM Genuine Keyboard' etc.

When asked via private message if they are the same as Apples supply chain parts they don't respond.

I do feel like I was silly to overlook the connector.

I can't imagine Apples price on a new logic board so maybe I was best to just let it go

The logic board with the 2.9GHz processor is $1,379 and the logic board with the 2.5GHz processor is $1,149. That makes it more cost effective to simply purchase a new machine.

Now that said if your case is in good shape that is worth about $50 minus eBay fees. Which is probably realistically $35 in your pocket. The Entire display assembly in good cosmetic shape with a working display and antenna for the wifi and bluetooth is worth over $150.

You could probably sell the entire machine for parts for $250 to $300 just to be done with it.

Apple OEM is a term that can be fudged and isn't the same as Apple. The website at the link says the keyboard is manufactured by Apple.

Well guys, it's gone now.

I've been thinking more about this iPad mini and so far it's doing a great job. Despite the lag.

I'm going forward with an open mind. Rethinking what I 'need' from a device.

Not sure if any of you have noticed my 'iPad picking up the slack' thread but I talk there about this next period of computing where I'm moving my business to the iPad. Until December. Then I'll have had enough time to evaluate whether or not to come back to the Mac or whether the iPad will continue to do. I hope it does. Any bias will wear off over the months as well as the novelty so if I do stay on the iPad I don't think I'll regret it. Only time can tell.

Thanks to everyone who replied

Wow. What a thread. Good choice in selling the Mac and not repairing. I have always had logic board failures after 3 years. Lucky on my mid-2012 Mac it failed 2 months before Apple Care ran out and got it swapped.

Anyhow. What's your budget on a Machine? Forgive me are you at Uni? If so you can get some great deals on Surface Pros atm. We are buying them for 500GBP a pop right now and it's the Education bundle with pen and keyboard.

P.S Windows 10 is great, you need some time to adjust. We've just rolled it out over 1000 both end users and engineers love it. Its simple, it works and we have not had any issues. From end user it just works because of the search function.

It took me a day of playing around to get used to it. If your buying a budget machine atom cpu or whatever rubbish is in there it will lag.

Hello, yes I'm a student in the UK. Where are you getting them for £500?! I looked at their student deals but none that low!

At the end of the year it'll be £800 - £1,000. Right now, £250. Though that £500 Surface is compelling!

Oh, such a tale of woe!

OP -- if you don't want the MacBook, sell it and move on.
What more is there really to say?

We've resolved the issue. :D It turns out he had a failure on his logic board and the machine is now gone. He is using an older iPad right now and saving up his money while considering his options later this year.
