Unfortunately, that is always the risk with cloud stuff. Once I can repalce all my automation stuff with homekit compatible swicthes,, lights, etc. I'll start doing it form least expensve to wait until it breaks expensive. Right now, I have a gumbo of devices, since no one manucaturer makes everything. For example, my 4 way switch only works with one manufacturers devices. Most of my stuff is from Amazon or Feit and work reasonably well, although Alexa often takes two or three tries to tuen on lights. My Ring ha s been the most reliable.

That may be true, but manufacturers should bear some responsibility to communicate this clearly to customers during purchase or initial unboxing. When a customer buys a computer, or a car . . . they understand that at some point they will no longer be given updates and the warranty will expire. What they don't expect is that at some arbitrary point Apple or Honda is going to turn something off on their end that will break functionality of the car or computer. These products were marketed as compatible with Alexa, and now Belkin is flipping a switch that completely breaks that functionality. That shouldn't be allowed . . . at the very least, not without clear communication to the customer at time of purchase.

So when the article says that "Wemo products configured with HomeKit before January 31, 2026 will continue to function through HomeKit without needing Wemo cloud services or the Wemo app" . . . does that mean that these Wemo products will continue to function indefinitely through HomeKit, even if they need to be removed and re-added to HomeKit at some point after 1/31/26?
No, if removed or reset after 1/31/2026 you can’t reconnect them unless your wemo device has a QR code w/ Apple Home logo (only the latest few models)

If your device has a physical HomeKit QR code sticker on the back, you might be able to re-add it directly via the Apple Home app. All others: no, add them and configure them before 1/31/26 and never by Belkin again

That's what I was assuming . . . and that's part of what makes this decision by Belkin so frustrating / disappointing, and why they will lose so much credibility with long-time customers.

Well, let's not go that far. Native HomeKit support is still the best solution (at least for those of us who are all-in on the Apple ecosystem).
Hubitat bridges zwave and zigbee into HomeKit, no dongles, no Linux knowledge, no cloud, no internet access required. Very reliable, cheap, c-7 is a great option.

You lost me at "bridge". As an Apple purist, bridges and hubs just feel wrong.
You’d change your tune if you used a Hubitat. I know your pain though, because IKEA, Hue and Aqara and other bridges are rough. I’d put Hubitat bridge up there with Lutron Caseta bridge, been flawless.

Using Wi-Fi is where you lose me. Definitely not the way to go needing to rely on shared infrastructure and the IP stack in general for each device. things are so much more reliable when you rid WiFi devices from the setup.
