The two second lag is the standard AirPlay lag, any native video player will compensate for it. Looks like Plex, Infuse etc. won't

Was working perfectly on previous MBP with same players, also works in Plex on IOS (ipad), so clearly an issue in the new MBP/Monterey combo

Perhaps you've set the system audio output to AirPlay, and are playing everything through the system output? If so I think everything could have the same two-second delay. If you set the output of the individual players to AirPlay it may sync correctly.

I used to do that yes (through the top right settings icon in the menu bar), and it was working perfectly.
(it still does for youtube or web browser videos)

I just tried through the player settings, but it does not work either :(

In fact when airplay is not selected as the default output, the airplay output does not appear in the players settings

no ethernet no buy - will be waiting for shairport to support airplay2

So a big no for Airplay 2 on Airport Express, sounds terrible on a good hifi equipment -> Firmware 7.6.9 or .8 (and Airplay 1) it is :(.

There are two options that look really nice now, have you tried either of them?

At $150 why do I not simply get a last gen apple TV?

You’d have to get HDMI to optical or analog converters, anssuming Apple TV works at all without a screen connected.

You’d still have to connect it to a screen any time ANYTHING goes wrong, and you’d be restricted to AirPlay. No Alexa, no Google, no EQ, no touch controls, no other services such as Tidal or Spotify and no audio in.

An Apple TV seems like a much worse solution in every single way imaginable, unless you actually want to use it as the Apple TV is intended to be used.

the WiiM looks tempting - I have however now bought a couple of RPI‘s and Hifiberrys, which is still cheaper.
But I wouldn’t have, if the WiiM existed already at that time, as it is much more convenient

I got an open-box-return WiiM mini for practically nothing, so I thought I’d try it. I have a few spots where Ethernet is not practical, so I did have use for it.

The hardware and the app are both really nice, I’m really surprised I haven’t heard a lot more about the WiiM products.

I’ve had a price alert on the Belkin one for years, and when it finally did dip below the threshold, I decided to try it out too. The hardware isn’t as nice, and it lacks a lot of the features (and again, no Ethernet) compared to the WiiM, but as an AirPlay 2 receiver it also does what it says on the tin. The setup through HomeKit is a nice touch.

I’m going to pick up an Eve Play and/or a WiiM Pro when they drop in price and replace an AirPort Express to see how they compare.

indeed both EVE and WiiM seems to be nice pieces of hardware (with the EVE more focused on the Apple Ecosystem only) - pity it took them that long

and even if you use it as intended there are (unexpected) restrictions - e.g. my brand-new Marantz receiver doesn’t treat HDMI inputs on par with analogue (or digital) audio inputs with regards to HEOS.
Unfortunately I am stuck with HEOS - as i sunk some money into their amps.
Also soundwise it is still the best

After a lot of messing around I ended up using my TV for all the HDMI inputs instead of the receiver, and feeding the audio from the TV back to the receiver over toslink. This has the added advantage that the receiver doesn't get to throw up its stupid overlay on top of whatever I am watching any time I do something to it, such as changing the volume.
