This is actually a clever way of how Apple trigger third party makers to make accessories for their product. Instead of making a hole (like Tile and Samsung SmartTag), buyer will need another accessories to attach it. So there will be more demand for its accessories, and more and more third party maker will join to produce it, making this product seems more valuable, customisable and personal.

Now compare this to Tile and Samsung SmartTag, buyers won't necessarily need another accessories since it already has a hole. So its not very popular for third party maker to make accessories for it.

This is something that make Apple looks 'stupid' for designing the AirTag without a hole, but very brilliant to expand the product's value when it's getting attention with more and more accessories produced for it.
Or for those that have a 3D printer, you can just print your own holder and attach it to a key ring, thereby bypassing the accessories market altogether.

Can't wait to see an accessory that enables the AirTag to be magnetically attached to things.
This would be an amazing use case for having it to track a bicycle.

I get the complaints of "no hole" but considering this is slightly larger than the CR2032 battery.. there is no room. Unless you create a square block like the Tile... this is a win for Apple. Had they made it square with a non-replaceable battery, there would be a whole new set of complaints.
Tile has had a replaceable battery for well over a year.

I'm trying to see where Air Tags fit in... I think they're for people who haven't used Tile? Maybe I'll buy these as my Tiles wear out?

If these airtags had a pinhole to allow for a key ring loop, we’d avoid this vast waste of global resources on plastic and leather cases for a little puck.

I know I’m being a bitter and miserable man and I’m sure this will make a terrific market for accessories. It just seems really wasteful for a bunch of ugly loops and clips.

Even if you have used tile, these are better, both because the network is much bigger (literally every ios device running a recent operating system, without needing a specific App) and because of the precision locating feature.

Tile has been making Tiles that use the exact same replaceable battery with the hole for years..

And the environmental impact of all that needless tat, versus just putting a hole in the tag?

Better than losing an item, and you have to buy the complete thing again.
Living environmentally doesn't mean you shouldn't buy stuff. Just buy responsibly and only what you need.

I’ve had two tile pros (it was metal and high quality but with non replaceable battery) and when it died I got a 4 pack of the ones with the replaceable battery but it was a plasticy lesser quality version and every time I have needed to find my keys it never works, even when it turns out the keys were less than 10 feet from where I was it would not work. I’ve been really disappointed with them lately. I see myself buying air tags. I was not that excited about them until seeing the demo with the ability of it directing you where to go and how they are taking advantage of the accessories and using them in an interesting way.

The moment cases here are intended to let you hide the airtag on your expensive things in case they get stolen. Which wont work if the tag sends out notices and starts beeping. Hopefully they know something we don’t know yet.

AirTags are 32x32… the Tile Pro is 42x42.

This is for people that have used Tile and were disappointed with the performance. also, for people that care about Privacy.

Totally, and it seems like it’s going to take several months for regular folks to absorb how these work.

I’m kind of enjoying some of the misconceived ideas in the forums - it’s like an experiment to see how people’s minds are blown and how they react.

Still don’t get what I’ll use these for.

mail one to a far away relative and track it for fun.

treasure hunt games - put one in a toy and hide it and then let your kids use your phone to find the hidden toy.

also great for finding your stolen bike.

The burger that you ate at lunch has a worse environmental impact than something that you’ll buy once in every couple of years.
Jokes on you I ate a chickie sammich.

I am absolutely thrilled that the battery can be replaced. Thank goodness.
