Can you explain a bit further what that hinge-locking mechanism does? What are the advantages of it compared to without?Both of them should work fine: I have ordered the Smart Feather because it ships with the Apple smart cover hinge-locking mechanism, a plus IMHO

Plastic curves over the Smart Cover hinge bar so it can't detach. You have to take off the Smart Feather before taking off the Smart Cover.
For people with weak magnets or who otherwise experience a lot of unintentional cover detaches, I can see the advantage. Personally, I can wave my iPad around by the Smart Cover so for me it'd be a disadvantage against versatility.
