    Hey guys,

I've searched a few times and have found just about nothing other than scraps of info. I've had my 1.1.1 jailbreak since day one and I have had just about zero problems with it at all. I've used 3rd party bug fixes that seem to solve all the problems that Apple has fixed with every release.

My question is simple. Can someone tell me what the benefits of moving up to 1.1.4 are? Moving Icons around? Stability? etc. If you dont feel like answering, point me in the right direction.

    Thanks so much,
    Arisian

I actually was curious about this, and I can't find any guide summarizing the revision history of the iPhone firmware. The major things, I think, from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4, include:

    - iTunes store
    - Google maps having location capabilities (I think Navizon works in 1.1.1, though?)
    - Video rentals
    - Manual music management
    - Language support

And a bunch of much smaller things....

If you don't want any of that, and none of the apps you want to install refuse to work in 1.1.1, why bother updating? I guess there are some security improvements, but I'm not sure how much of an actual threat those issues pose to begin with.

What do you mean by Manual music management?

My understanding is that, in 1.1.1, there was no "Manually manage music and videos" option for the iPhone like there is for other iPods.... But I've never used 1.1.1....

    This article:

Indicates the feature arrived in 1.1.3....

Oops, sorry, quite true. I think it's generally the same deal, but some of those things don't apply to the Touch. So video rentals would be the major difference between the 1.1.1 firmware and the current, I guess.

I try to keep my firmware at the latest rev (v1.1.4). This keeps iTunes happy (I don't get the "You have updates" messages) and most (but not all) current apps tend to be written to be compatible with v1.1.4. I just like to stay current.

But if you have a setup (say, v1.1.1) that works solidly for you and does what you need, then there's no reason to upgrade for upgrade's sake.

I'm not sure you can actually rent from an iPhone or iPod Touch. I think you can only sync movies rented from a Mac or :apple:tv....

very much what I was thinking. Thanks for the replies. Everything that has been listed so far don't suggest that an upgrade is even remotely necissary. It's going to take alot for apple to get me to step back into jail, if you will.

January pack was included with 1.1.1 jailbreak. And they were free. :)

    1.1.3 offered the following upgrades:
    •Wiggly icons, to rearrange them
•Upgrades to the applications, some of them quite nice
•Lyrics show, if you have them setup on your computer
(this showed up easier on Classic/Nanos)
•"Legal" Apple apps for the Touch
    •Also, webclips (almost forgot)

    1.1.4 added:
•Safari bug fix with multiple pages
•Some other bug fixes, quite a bit more stable, actually

You can do some of this with 3rd party stuff, but not all.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

In conclusion, I think I will wait until I go back into the arms of Apple as far as my jailbroken iPod goes. My iPod is incredibly stable, alas, the only thing I am missing is the wiggly icons, and I can live without those.

    thanks again,
    Arisian

Well, with Customize and some other apps you can rearrange icons.
