I just bought a airport extreme firmware 7.7.3 and for some reason after setting up everything web pages load extremely slow ! Any remedy to this? Maybe its user error i never had trouble with any other routers I've had

This sounds just like a DNS issue. Try changing your DNS in AirPort Utility (If you are located in the United States) to OpenDNS or Google DNS.

That is perfectly fine to disagree with my claim. If the AirPort is not easy to integrate into your setup then that is unfortunate because normally it is one of the easiest. AirPort supports VPN passthrough from an outside source to say a server and also supports Back To My Mac. There are many uses for VPN so I must ask, what do you want your AirPort to be doing with VPN? If you just want access to the disk we can help with that.

They are probably referring to the inability to setup an always on vpn connection such as pptp vpn or open ssl through dd-wrt, tomato, or pfsense through the router.

Complete conjecture, but they either want all of their devices to automatically hook to the vpn instead of separate clients on each device for ease of use...or they have a device they cannot hook to their vpn, like an Apple TV that won't show live ABC or MLS Live regional blackout due to their ip address.

FYI, i picked up a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 last night - took less than 20 minutes to get it set up to my liking, and is a fantastic router so far....

Thought I should share my experience, coming from an Time Capsule Wireless N to a fancy "gaming-oriented" Netgear Nighthawk. With the Time Capsule, I never had to reboot or power cycle it to fix a network issue. With the Nighthawk, I'm finding I have to reboot it every couple of weeks because a device would just stop connecting wirelessly for no reason.

In comparison, the Nighthawk is very fast and has LOADS of options and features. With an external hard drive attached, the time machine functionality was a pain in the arse and was erratic.
The Time Capsule, though, was rock solid.

The Airport Time Capsule is really difficult to set up. It's so difficult that it took at least 2 minutes to set up, and on top of all that waiting I had to walk downstairs and unplug my Cable Modem for 30 seconds. Yeah really difficult.

In all honesty it generally is easy to setup, but when you have a complex network you are working with it isn't always easy. At school I have to configure the central Extreme as a router, enable all of our Timed Access controls, configure the IP range, add it to the DMZ on the gateway, etc. It isn't always plug and play but when it is finally setup it is rock solid.

routers

I have actually had the AP router from apple and it sucked. I had a mac and windows on it. I ditched it and went back to linksys. I had the old die hard router that everyone and their brother had and it never had any problem. As soon as the latest like it came out with AC ability I bought it! Fantastic! Now they have one even better and I want it as I can configure it better.
Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on it, again.

I disagree about the Apple routers are easier to set up. To start, you need to use their own utility to do it. Instead of a browser like every other router. I can't even reconfigure my older (but still useful) Airport Express because Apple dropped software support for it in the current Airport Utility, and the old one doesn't run on Mavericks. They limit your choices, which can work for some people; YMMV.

Secondly, they are pretty good but not great routers. And that's comparing them to consumer, not business or enterprise solutions. Check smallnetbuilder.com for comparisons.

Finally, no external antenna. Looks nicer, but limits functionality depending on your wifi needs. I would expect to be able to make use of a directional antenna, for example, with a router in that price range.

I'm happy with mine. Only router I haven't had to tinker with to make everything work in the house. 2 wired and 11 wireless clients without any port forwarding, static IP set in DMZ, etc, etc like I've had to do with Linksys, Asus and other routers in the past.

However I recognize that a lot of those settings aren't available to me so thats definitely a negative. Thankfully I haven needed them.

If you look at Google there is a way to get the older utility on Mavericks. Corey J. Mahler wrote a program that will let it open on Mavericks. Check it out.

Thank you. I would appreciate some help.

Never mind the VPN, for now.

I'm back to square one simply trying to connect a new Mac Mini directly to the Time Capsule for purposes of network and internet access and network attached storage, using an ethernet cable and Apple's ethernet to USB adapter, or using the ethernet cable only.

"Network Diagnostics" says "This computer does not seem to be connected to a DSL or cable modem or to an Ethernet network."

All the devices are up and running and connected properly but the Network Status shows that Ethernet, Network Settings, ISP, Internet and Server all have "Failed". (The printer attached to the TC also reads as "not connected" when trying to print.)

Yet I'm able to access the same Time Capsule from a MacBook via wi-fi and connect to the LAN, internet and usually also NAS and printer.

So what is amiss?

Is the Mini running server? Is Internet Sharing accidentally enables? If you use the regular Ethernet port and not the adapter does it work? You do realize that the USB to Ethernet adapter is 10/100 Mbps and the Thunderbolt Adapter is Gigabit, right?

Is the Mini running server?

No. Based on previous success accessing the network from a MacBook Air via the ethernet/USB adapter, it is not necessary to run the server OS, as I assume you would be aware.

- Is Internet Sharing accidentally enables?
No.

- If you use the regular Ethernet port and not the adapter does it work?

Ethernet cable plugs into the TC, other end plugs in to the Mini using either the USB adapter or directly to the ethernet port on the Mini. Also tested the cable using MacBook Air, which lacks an ethernet port but can link to the TC using the ethernet cable plus USB adapter. No luck there either. WiFi ok though.

- You do realize that the USB to Ethernet adapter is 10/100 Mbps and the Thunderbolt Adapter is Gigabit, right?

Am not using Thunderbolt adapter, but Ethernet to USB, which previously worked fine with my MacBook Air

Thank you for any advise.

I was asking about Internet Sharing because if it is enabled it will disable a port. Open System Preferences --> Network and click the minus button on the internal Ethernet and re-add the interface. Also try a new location.

Better integration with Apple products. I had to get an Airport Extreme to remotely wake my mac that's connected via wifi.

No. There is a location menu at the top. Please refer to my screenshot!

Thank you. I instead tried a different ethernet cable, and was able to connect to a MacBook Air using the Apple Ethernet to USB adapter. So the first ethernet cable might be defective or the wrong type. I will get a longer ethernet cable to connect to the Mac Mini ethernet port or using the USB adapter. It looks like this problem is solved.

Glad you fixed it. I thought that the MacBook Air did not have issues connecting and only the Mini which would generally rule out the cable. Try recrimping the cable to 568b on both sides to determine if only one of the crimps was bad or if the cable itself is damaged.

I would start from checking the DNS settings on your Mac.
First simple ting to try - Network Preferences > Assist me... > Diagnostics
