The watch provides convenience and it makes my life a lot easier and more efficient.
But I could live without it as long as I have a smartphone.
But I will never give up my Apple watch because it is like not having a car.

What they said is that while Series 3 will get Watch OS 7, it's likely it won't get Watch OS 8.

So if you buy a Series 3 today, you'll get software updates for a year.
They might well fall foul of consumer laws in some countries if that is the case. Whether people will challenge it, they could be entitled to a newer replacement should OS updates cease after just 12 months. That’ll be interesting to see and I’m not going to lie I’m quite appalled Apple are still selling an older model with the intention of dropping support soon.

One unsung feature which I’ve come to love is that you can simply raise your wrist, and tell it to remind you of something. My memory is such that if I think “oh must make a reminder about that” by the time I’ve got round to my iPhone and opening the reminders app I’ve already forgotten!! Being able to do it straight away on the watch is game changing, for me at least with reminders.
I was like you at first, didn’t really get the whole smart watch thing and didn’t know what value I’d get. But I haven’t looked back in the 16 months since I took the plunge, and all the things everyone has pointed out and more have sold me on it

Another nice feature (although not perfect) is using message dictation or Siri to call or text someone.

I've had them on my wrist since day 1 - so little over five years now. I rely on my Watch more than I rely on my iPhone.
I wear it overnight to track my sleep, so I am used to leaving it on the charger when I get up in the morning doing my morning routines.
I don't even remember the last time I set an alarm on my iPhone as the buzz on the AW is strong enough to wake me up in the morning. This comes in super handy if you are living with a partner and you both wake up at different times in the morning.
Setting up a timer while cooking/housekeeping and being able to quickly respond to a text without having to locate my iPhone is very convenient to me.
Closing the activity rings and actively participating in monthly challenges (Challenges app is pretty amazing) have all been a constant source of motivation to live a healthier life for me.
LTE option comes in handy when I am in the pool allowing me to stay connected. I sometimes leave my iPhone behind to go on an extended run/bike ride and take my music with me (you can use any bluetooth headphone with an AW.) It is a relief to know that I'd be able to call 911 or get ahold of someone if I were to get stranded somewhere.
S3 is a great gadget if you don't care about the extra health benefits the S4 and S5 offer. You could stay connected, track your activity progress and have fun with it.
I would encourage you to pick up a watch, use it for a few days and see how you like it. Most retailers have two weeks return policies without a restocking fee. You can then decide whether you want it or not. No one here would be able to replicate their user experiences for you because everyone's take on the AW is unique to themselves. You gotta convince YOURSELF first and the best way to do so would be to grab one and take advantage of the return policy.
Cheers.

Really? I mean, most products I buy, I don't expect software updates for them, they are just "as is" when I buy them. And what about Android phones that I keep hearing about where the manufacturers never get around to updating the OS? How do countries with laws like that decide which products manufacturers must provide software updates for, and which products don't require updates?

After all, it's not like the watch stops working when the software don't update. My mom and my partner are both still using the original Apple watch, and the software for that stopped updating at I think 5? Anyway, they still work fine, just don't get the latest OS features.

Also, we don't know for sure Apple won't update Series 3 beyond watchOS 8. That's just one poster's speculation, based on pattern of past watch updates.

It depends if the performance suffers as a result of not being support. I’m assuming even if the S3 stops having software updates it’ll still get security updates seeing as it uses Apple Pay? I have no idea about Android phones as I don’t use them. It’s probably a case that nobody challenges this but with electrical goods in Europe there is a reasonable life expectancy from new on products that can be covered under the sale of goods act.

That can’t be right, Apple are still selling the Series 3. Surely they aren’t selling that knowing they are about to drop software support for it?!

The S3 is 2x the speed of the S2. Even though the S2 is getting dropped I think there's likely some software life left in the S3 yet. I don't think they're "about to drop software support" for the S3 at all, otherwise they'd be selling the S4 instead of it. They didn't; they kept it around and stopped production of the s4 instead.

The S3 is probably the first one that I'd consider "fast enough". GF has zero issues with hers, but when I go back to my S2 its very slow compared to my S4.
