I loved my iPad until I got the iPhone 4. I found the display superior on the iPhone 4 and wasn't thrilled about paying a second time for many of the same apps on the iPad. Plus, I needed a laptop when I traveled for work, so the iPad became pretty redundant.

I sold my iPad and replaced it with an 11" MBA, which was great for travel. Almost the same size as the iPad, but could handle any task I needed. With my new job I won't be traveling much, so I recently sold the MBA and have a nice little jar filled with the proceeds waiting for an iPad 2 announcement.

I am still debating whether I need an iPad at all, considering I have a 15" MBP and an iPhone 4. In my opinion, it is absolutely unnecessary, but also super cool if you can afford it.

The iPhone while an incredible device, next to the ipad is very limited in ergonomics IMO. Comparatively, I hate using iphone for web viewing. It's a painful and frustrating process IMO. All that tapping, zooming etc becomes annoying when you have the option not to. And while the keyboard is incredible for a phone it's too small and annoying for lots of use.

I end up lugging my MBP around alot so I look forward to getting the iPad so I can leave that weight behind.

i already own an iphone 4, and a mba 11"

if i get the ipad, would it be overkill?
my dad was thinking of getting one the other day, and my gf has hinted that she might need one (or a tablet, since her netbook is slow as hell)

if im getting it for both my dad and gf, i might as well pick one up myself... lol

if you were in my situation, would you use the ipad enough to justify the cost?

Its hard to justify the price given it doesn't do anything extra if you already own a Mac and iP4 but the experience is very good. So, if you feel you need one just get it. And if possible wait for iPad 2.

iPad is redundant if you have an iphone.

My wife and I both have iphone 4's. she's a teacher, and her school is trying out the ipad for teaching purposes, so we had one in our house for a week as a trial period for her. Note that we also have a 9 month old baby crawling about.

I was expecting that we'd fall in love with the ipad after that week. What really happened was this: I had fun for about an hour playing around with the ipad. After that, the iPad sat in its box and we barely touched it for the week. That was evidence enough to me that we don't need it. We are so used to using our iPhone 4's for web browsing, e-mail, gaming, facebook etc., that the iPad is completely redundant for us.

I think the main deciding factor for us was ergonomics: We are so used to operating the iphone one-handed (example, cradling baby with one hand/arm, answering an e-mail on the iphone with the other). You can't use the iPad one-handed unless you are also propping it up against your lap or your knees. I'll admit that it was nice for web-browsing in bed, but only if you lift up your knees and prop it up against your legs. Reading books on it was a pain because you had to use two hands or prop it up. Too heavy to read books one-handed, as I am used to doing with my iphone.

We will be getting an ipad 2 for my mom, who is in her 60's and would benefit greatly from facetime and the bigger screen. But for us, the iPhone's make the ipad unnecessary, and we probably won't be getting one for the forseeable future.

Would anyone recommend the ipad if you have an iphone 3gs and a macbook pro already? I hear amazing things about the iphone 4, but I don't have an iphone 4 at this time. Does that change your thoughts on if someone should consider an ipad?

Yes.
No.
