You can't be serious....

Hey, I'm pretty much in that domain! hehehe

word.

Its not the fact that that they used the WTC in the ad, its the fact that they are selling mp3 players. WTF do mp3 players have to do with the WTC? They arent selling safety gear or collecting donations. They might as well have been selling diapers, printer ink or even loofa.

Or bombproof mp3 players?

This whole "America is insensitive" line parroted throughout this thread is a bunch of generalized nonsense.

It's not nonsense. Americans as individuals are less sensitive toward humanitarian and cultural aspects since they are not exposed to that nearly as much. Americans are, however, a lot more sensitive toward objects, products and whatever eventually makes its way onto the TV. The environment for cultural sensitivity just isn't there. Everyone belongs to a giant faceless corporation or a governmental body, where they spend a lot of time making decisions based on money, it's rather hard to say you are as sensitive as someone whose culture has been suffering problems for a long time, and I mean greater than 200 years of history kind of long. Maybe compared to the next American, you'll find someone who is more sensitive, but then, you are restricting yourself to a very America-Centered view.

It's not just Americans. In my first 2 years of university I knew a Polish girl, she spoke about how different it is in the UK in terms of lacking cultural (and family) interest. I don't think England is as bad as America, or at least the way they're portrayed in every TV show, film and documentary I've seen. But what do I know, I've only lived in England.

I'm not surprised. A lot of kids here can't even identify their own country on a map. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12591413/

" * One-third of respondents couldn’t pinpoint Louisiana on a map and 48 percent were unable to locate Mississippi.
* Fewer than three in 10 think it important to know the locations of countries in the news and just 14 percent believe speaking another language is a necessary skill.
* Two-thirds didn’t know that the earthquake that killed 70,000 people in October 2005 occurred in Pakistan.
* Six in 10 could not find Iraq on a map of the Middle East.
* While the outsourcing of jobs to India has been a major U.S. business story, 47 percent could not find the Indian subcontinent on a map of Asia.
* While Israeli-Palestinian strife has been in the news for the entire lives of the respondents, 75 percent were unable to locate Israel on a map of the Middle East.
* Nearly three-quarters incorrectly named English as the most widely spoken native language.
* Six in 10 did not know the border between North and South Korea is the most heavily fortified in the world. Thirty percent thought the most heavily fortified border was between the United States and Mexico."

Ouch... Poor MS and Barbour. We don't know ya! :D

Oddly enough, it is only Americans who do surveys like this.
Other countries dont like to show how stupid their population is.
America does not hold a monopoly on stupidity.

But more sadly, they CAN name all finalists on the last American Idol or list all the names in Paris Hilton's sidekick.

I dont know the answer to either of those questions nor do I personally know anyone who does.

Did I mention I live in America?

The ignorance and smarter then thou blanket statements againced the U.S. baffles me.

I believe that it's particularly difficult for a lot of people to go beyond their daily routine. Some people only know what it takes to get by each day. This seems evident as some woman called the Orlando, Floriduh emergency number when her washing machine overflowed.

It's more difficult for people in small countries, bordered on all sides by other countries, to not know what's happening outside their little world but they may still only know about six or seven other countries. People tell me that they like Japan or the U.S.A. but they tell me very little that's real. Do films and t.v. shows depict real people? Are we all so nice looking?

Those of us here discuss things and we learn things but those people who do their shift at work, go home, eat a meal, and drink a beer probably don't care to know because they don't need to know. Someone once told me as I was training her to use an application "Don't tell me why it works or how it works or why it needs to be done, just tell me what buttons to push."

As Malaysia and Singapore are commonwealth countries, the education is similar to Australia's but Malaysia in particular, has a lack of funds but I'd say that both countries' systems are quite full.

They come here for the universities because it's less expensive to do so. They don't have to mix with anyone but other Singaporeans or Malaysians if they don't want to when they are here (and often that is the case). Malaysia is independent of the Commonwealth since 1957.

Would you say that even though the governments (national and local) don't have a white-only policy, that a number of people still retain that as a personal policy, just as they do here in the U.S.A.?

No I would not. Australia is very much different. Here in Sydney we don't even have christmas decorations throughout the city but for some flags because we don't want to offend the muslims. Would Malaysia stop with the broadcast of the morning prayers so as not to offend the christians there?

Yeah, because other countries like Japan and China are busy sending their offsprings to international math competitions and whopping our butt in academia. And they are spending time to figure out ways to make profit like China and India, selling whatever Americans would like to buy, to entertain what is a general crowd of people who are still discussing how they DON'T know this or that or how they CAN'T do this or that.

Recently, the US conducted math and literature competency tests, to evaluate how their own education system was performing specifically against the education systems in other countries. (A form of a standardized test). And wouldn't you know it, all students in Washington D.C. failed miserably in math and literature, the officials were shocked, so they decided to make 4th graders do obedience training, inspired by the military, and make math classes 30 mins longer for the already attention deficit, and, it is not working.

Im not implying that we as Americans are smarter but I am pointing out that ALL countries have stupid, uneducated people in them. Why we are singleing out America is beyond me. Is is because we are the only ones who like to figure out how many stupid people we have? I want to see the other countries results on the questionnaire percentages shown before. Ive traveled around the globe and I meet the most idiotic people all over the world.

And ALL the students failed miserably? Id like to see those statistics....

Judging a countries intelligence by a handfull of fourth graders from inner city D.C. is insane. Where were the other countries students from? The slums of Beijing? I doubt it.

Are we not also trying to figure out how to make profits?
Being the richest country in the word must stand for something....?

Do you really believe ALL Chinas and Japans students are smart?
Do you really believe ALL Chinas and Japans students are smarter then ALL American students?

Your blanket statements are rediculous and missing my point completely.

The only thing for sure is that this guy (see attached image) Takeru Kobayashi from Japan, whips our asses every year at eating the most hot dogs in 12 minutes. And that my friend is a true travesty;)

Yes, it does. Which other country comes out with a show called: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackass_(TV_series) ???

C'mon, All countries enjoy watching people get hurt while making asses of themselves too.

Take for instance the even more popular Takeshi's Castle from Japan.

This has been sindicated and extremely popular in-
Spain, India, UK, Germany, France, Austrailia, Malaysia, Italy, Philippines, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Greece as well as the U.S.

Each country even redubs the show to comply with the local hunger for stupidity.

Again, please stop with the blanket statements.

True but we exported that to them eh?

I would think it wrong to keep people from displaying Christmas decorations. It's not that I celebrate Christmas from a religious standpoint, but I believe in freedom to celebrate any religion that doesn't hurt people.

I believe that Malaysia will become more open to other religions but I also don't believe it will happen soon or suddenly. What I'm told is that things aren't so bad, though. I'll see for myself sometime.

Busters moves were choreographed.
These guys fling themselves at walls in velcro suits randomly causing much humor and schadenfreude.

Not the same IMO;)

You got your schadenfreude in my weltschmerz!

NO you got your weltschmerz in my schadenfreude!

Gotta love the Germans, while their choreographed marching acts of the first half of the twentieth century weren't popular favorites, they do have a way with words.

Well, in the public school education system, the examination was a failure if you look at the average scores. This was explicitly done in comparison to evaluate North american youth against other countries. The US government is very worried about our education, and just recently, Bill Gates has pledged to donate most of his money in 50 years after his death to the US education system to try to improve the situation because, quite frankly, he is sick of the tech industry and research sector hiring indians or chinese or japanese all the time whenever they need someone who's intelligent. Now, bear in mind, that there are intelligent people from our own education systems, but they are in mostly in special classes, or in private school, and there aren't nearly many of them in comparison.

That isn't my opinion, or my statement. I took that first hand from the intellectual Jeff Schmidt (you might wanna read up on him a bit) at a recent lunch together with him and D. Rancourt.

Other people in other cultures also do stupid things, quite often for monetary gains, and guess who taught them that one - Uncle $am, the number 1 advocate of blind capitalism. That is not to say there aren't people who are stupid elsewhere, that's obviously not true. But you are taking it to the extremes and supposedly there exist stupid people elsewhere it should be okay that we have stupid people too ? For one, here in North America, our immigration policies makes it clear that we need intelligent people, for two, the US is only the most powerfully economically under a disguise, it also has a near 4 trillion dollar debt, even after all the oil and natural resources it siphoned from elsewhere. If you looked at the latest trade deficit and how it is growing year after year, you'll realize that this so called economic superpower is but a small hump in surplus in history. And then, you'd have to consider how being richer has brought a lot of people this bubble of ignorance and eventual stupidity.

The "we are doing it because you guys are so much worse" additude is pathetic.
I believe they used the image because it was stock. Ie, cheap or free. When they found out what it was, they removed it. Maybe some knew all along, but I doubt they did it to spite us.

Oddly enough, it is only Americans who do surveys like this.
Other countries dont like to show how stupid their population is.
America does not hold a monopoly on stupidity.
That's because we're just that self involved. :p

Thank you for clarifying this.

The running themes through this thread have been-

Americans are stupid
Everyone else is smarter then Americans

Now I am of course American, I do not believe we are better or smarter then anyone else in the world nor are we perfect in any way in the definition.

I am a bit annoyed being thrown into categories with blind blanket statements in the very tired anti-American bandwagon.

Demographically there is an equal ratio of smart/dumb people throughout the world.

"Educated" is certainly another subject and again we (Americans) are not perfect nor is any other country in the world.

Its hard to compare two countries "education systems" when the populations are grossly improportionate. Having an education system that is successfull throughout a country with 300 million people is far more difficult then doing that in a country of 100 million.

Pulling a handfull of fourth graders from one of the worst education districts in the U.S. and comparing them to peers from another countries elite is hardly scientific and totally distorting.

Yes, the education system in the U.S. is not perfect and could certainly use help, but to assume that we as Americans are all dumber then the rest of the world shows how "uneducated" these opinions are.

Oh really? I'm stunned that you find that over half of kiddies here being unable to identify even our own states on a map to be "educated!"

My goodness, why do we need all these iPods if we don't even know geography.

Oh, we have Paris Hellton to worship I forgot. Dohhhh!!!
