I’ve never been a watch guy... I mean, my phone is in my pocket and it has any time I could ever need!

But, I’m trying to get in shape, so I’m looking for a better way to monitor heart rate (to track my workouts).

Fit bits can do this, at a much lower cost.

So I’m curious: what exactly can an apple watch add to my day to day?

it's a discreet way to get iMessages/notifications. So for example, I'm in a meeting, and someone texts me - my phone will not buzz or beep, but my watch will "tap" me in the wrist, I glance down and I see the message.

I like having the temperature, my next meeting, time left before sunset, etc. displayed on the face. Stuff like that.

If you are getting in shape, there's a lot of fitness apps available to help you track calories eaten, glasses of water, etc. depending on how you want to use it.

Finally, if you get the cellular version, you can leave your phone at home when you exercise and still get calls, stream music or podcasts, get texts, use Siri, etc.

It can also do health.

I laughed at this more than I should have.

In all honesty: you can show your Stainless Steel Gold 44mm Cellular LTE GPS MAX Watch to your friends, so you can ooh- and ahh- over how you paid $2000 for a plastic watch.

  • navigating on a bike is fantastic with the watch. no unsafe fumbling with a phone. haptic turns, and maybe some quick glances while your hands stay on the grips
  • plane boarding passes on your wrist are really nice when trying to juggle carry on bags, jackets
  • discreet, quick notifications/temp/stock

Timers for cooking with just your voice. Silent taps on your wrist in the morning so your alarm doesn't have to wake your S.O.

The navigation is cool! Love getting texts on it versus taking out my phone. Apple Pay. Soon ecg. Show you your calendar at a glance on the home screen...and reminders! Track sleep, alarm, flight notifications.

For pure workout tracking, I don't think the Watch offers any real advantages with walking or running other than being able to leave your phone behind and still have music.

The best thing about the watch is being able to use Apple Pay on it as well as your loyalty cards, boarding passes and even some event tickets.

I don’t know if fit bits do this...they didn’t when I had one...but the Apple Watch encourages you to keep moving throughout the day. I appreciate the nudge to finish off the day strong when I haven’t met all my goals. I have had a fit but like I said...and I can’t imagine going back to one now.

I was actually just coming back to add this. I've been into lifting since I got out of the military back in '05. It's a huge part of my life but now that I'm getting older, I'm finding it harder to motivate myself as often as I used to and the rings on the watch definitely have an impact. I'm nowhere near the 1000 move goal badge but it still bothers me that there's nothing past that as far as achievements go.
