I ordered the HP LP2465 from HP Business Solutions Direct. Returnable if I don't like it and best service/3 yr. warranty there is. They will overnight a replacement if I need that due to problems. I was bolstered by the fact that Eizo uses the Samsung PVA and S-PVA panels in nearly ALL of their monitors.

Abstract... I have a great pro portrait lab that I've used for years. They specialize in printing for professional portrait studios. And yes, reflected light from a printed image is always duller than the transmitted light from a computer monitor and colors are never absolutely the same... I don't expect that. In fact, photo paper is not even closely capable of reproducing the range of colors and richness as one sees on a monitor. I do expect that what I see on my monitor will be a very close predictor of what I will see on prints from my lab. Once I calibrate to their output.

I am recently retired fro the pro lab business. My lab would print in Adobe RGB with our output devices which were very high end Lightjet and Poiletronica. Most labs and all of the portrait labs I know ( I personally toured most of the large ones) print in sRGB. If you send them a Adobe RGB file it will get transformed into sRGB when printed. IMO if you want the best it's EZIO but it comes at a price. I use LeCie and Samsung products.

dooyou... the Eizo S2431 has an S-PVA panel, not an IPS panel. No doubt, though, it's a nice monitor... just not an IPS panel.

Interestingly, the vast majority of Eizo monitors use Samsung's PVA and S-PVA panels. Obviously, Eizo's reputation for good monitors reflects very well on Samsung's S-PVA panels. They are great... if not quite IPS technology. Only a very few of Eizo's most expensive graphics monitors (CG-prefix in model name and some L's) are actually IPS.

I presume you're going to be using a hardware color calibration device, since you're obviously worried about prints matching the screen?

Basically any of those monitors in your list will work quite well if you calibrate them properly (not by eye!)

OK... some of you may be bored with this thread, but I just found a website which identifies what panel technology & make/model is used in any given monitor. Very cool, considering getting this information seems otherwise tough to track down!

The panel used in the HP 2465 that I ordered is an S-PVA panel made by Samsung and also used in the following monitors: (Given the reputation that Eizo enjoys, it would seem that this is probably a pretty good panel.)

Dell 2407WFP (*) (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2 eller LTM240L2) panel.

Eizo CE240W (widescreen) has a 24 inch 8 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Eizo CE240W-K (widescreen) has a 24 inch 8 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Eizo S2410W (widescreen) has a 24 inch 8 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Eizo S2410W-K (widescreen) has a 24 inch 8 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Eizo S2411W-BK (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Eizo S2411W-WS (widecreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Fujitsu-Siemens P24-1W (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Fujitsu-Siemens P24-1W (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) SPVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Fujitsu-Siemens S24-1W (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) SPVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

HP LP2465 (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Samsung 244T (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

Samsung 245T (widescreen) has a 24 inch 6 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM240M2) panel.

We use these at work for graphics, CAD, and GIS work and we are very pleased with them. Very bright displays with good color.

CWallace... I have this monitor now (HP LP2465) and I couldn't be happier with it. 24" Widescreen. Beautiful, bright, neutral right out of the box. Even from side to side (unlike many of the panels I've heard about in the new 24" iMacs). Excellent build quality. 3 year HP warranty, including backlight. HP stands behind them superbly. Should a monitor problem occur that they can't correct immediately, they will replace it overnight. Sells at Mac/PCConnection for about $525 right now. Very close in quality to the S-IPS panels that Apple once used in all the iMacs.

Calling DHart

DHart,

Thanks for posting all that great information and research. This is exactly what I was looking for as well...a nice 23-24 monitor. I was thinking of an ACD, but was not sure if it was competitive now-a-days, but from your research, my impression is that it is still a very competitive monitor, at least for photography. I will be using the monitor for photos, but also for viewing some HD video. So I still have some research to do.

I wanted to ask you about the Wicom tablet. Where can I find infomation on its capabilities and uses. I went to the mfg website, but would like see some gallery illustrations of stuff that is created with the tablet??

Thanks again for the post.

BrokenE... I'm glad my effort has been of some use to you.

As for the tablet, I use it rather than a mouse for photo retouching because it is so much easier and quicker to do detailed manipulations. I use a Wacom Intuos 3 graphics tablet which is sized to match the widescreen display. Awesome tool. I don't know what more to say about it... if you need more information on tablets, I'd suggest doing some searches.

I would also advise you to consider the HP LP2465 display as it is several hundred dollars lower in price than the Apple 23", has much better positionability on your desk, has a rock-solid 3 year warranty, and has a superb image quality. Not that the Apple 23" wouldn't be a good choice, just that I think the overall benefits and value of the HP are stronger. Either way, you'll wind up with a great monitor.
