Best 3G IOS to run

I have a 3G that a friend gave me that is running 3.1.3 that he wanted updated. What is the latest version that runs decent on the 3G?

Honestly, 3.1.3 would be the best, but if he must be in the 4.x series then use 4.2.1.

you should upgrade the Gs. I have run iOS4.x on my Gs since onset of the 4.x upgrade and it's great. zero slow down. if anything, it's been running better.

3G...different story. I'm keeping my wife's on 3.1

I agree with pdqgp. 4.2.1 runs great on the 3GS.
While the 3G is probably fast enough, 128MB just isn't enough RAM.

3.1.3 - wouldn't go higher than that. It's unusable with iOS 4.
