WD has the My book Pro 1 tb, that is raid-able. You can RAID1 the drive to have it mirror the two 500 gig drives, or you can RAID0 the drive for a 1tb drive. I don't think they cost much over 500, and it is cheaper than buying two 500 gig My Books.

hows the reliability on the 1TB versions?

I've heard it's very good. And this version has "easy access to replace drives." So, if a drive fails in the RAID1, you can fix the drive without sending it off. My business partner has had two lacie drives that both died within a year of owning each. He had to send them off for a very long time before they were replaced. The My Book Pro seems to be user-fixable for the most part. Oh and I found the price, it's $454.00 from new egg.

the price seems very good and I like the fact that its RAID0/1..

i checked out the g-tech g-raid2 which seemed good at first, but it's RAID0 only and i'm not sure how good that would be for storage purposes ;)

do you have any opinions on OWC's external drives? they seem to come with seagate drives which are usually very good. something like this (500GB, no raid) for $295 which seems like a good price:

but i don't know much about OWC's quality compared to others such as the mybook..

How quiet does the WD MyBook Pro run? I'm interested in the 250 GB version, which amazon UK have for £119 at the moment.

I keep one of my drives off site. The RAID1 will still cause me data loss if I delete something by accident. With a scheduled backup, I can protect myself a little bit with a delayed removal from my backup drive.

I like the idea of having 2 TB Books with RAID 1 enabled so I can protect myself from hard drive failures. I am looking forward to using Apple's new backup software next year with versioning.

Grais rather tempermental

Not too convinced with the GRAID as it is very tempermental. You cannot shut down or boot it out of sync with you system. My experience is the catalog file corrupts very easily and you data gets locked within the machine and if you do not have a backup anywhere easy you're screwed.
Just be aware it must be handled with carefully not as robust as the lacie or other external drives.

Lacie makes a great enclosure, but you never know wich HD is inside. I've seen Lacie d2s with Maxtor, Samsung and Seagate. Their product is covered by a 1 year warranty.
Mercury Elite Pro Aluminum units are mounted with the latest Seagate drives. The unit is covered by a 2 year warranty PLUS 3 year warranty for the drive, directly from Seagate (the drive itself is covered by a 5 year warranty). I don't think you'll find a better deal than this, the 500GB unit costs $295.

A 300GB LaCie just died on me. I've replaced it with a 500GB Micronet Minimate connected to a Mac Mini to make a fast NAS drive. Works well. :)

Every customer review I've read for these say the fan sounds like hair dryer. I was bummed because I really wanted the 1tb raid 1 for my iMac 24. Anyone have experience?

I just purchased Lacie 500 GB triple interface big disk D2. I wanted to get the external HD with FW800. I usually go with Lacie or Maxtor/Seagate for my external HD. None of Lacie has yet to fail on me (160GB/250GB/100GB/120GB and 500GB). I wanted to go with Maxtor 1T HD as the previous poster commented; but, that thing is too big on my crowded computer desk. If I have more bigger desk space or add the 3rd desk, I would go with Maxtor 1T Turbo drive.
