The reinforcements are prominent because they have to be. Imagine them placed on the sides making the case wider. Or imagine them placed on top and contained within, making the case thicker. One could make a case with a sheet slab of metal within so that it's strong and concealed at the same time. Or just rubber band your phone to a metal slab that's been rounded on the edges to make it pocket friendly.
