Best alternative to iPhone?

Pixel. But don’t kid yourself. The main difference in phones is the software and googles android is SUCH A MESS. Using my mothers pixel (trying to help her with it) is terrible, there are so many “little issues” that pop up like notifications that we can’t get rid of.. honestly, there’s a reason people buy iphones over androids and trust me, for a lot of those people it’s not just the hardware it’s the software // iOS that makes it worthwhile.

Sorry to make you feel bad, but look at all the major publications AND Youtubers. 12 Pro Max remains the best point-n-shoot camera for stills. Yes, Samsung beats it at zoom…that’s about it.

And then you add in VIDEO capability, and the gap b/w 12PM and the rest of Android further widens. Not even close.

Like i said, with the exception of 120 Hz, 12 Pro Max remains the BEST display. The only display that may knock it off is the S21 Ultra…but up to now, 12 Pro Max remains the best.

In fact, according to XDA forum (yes, YOUR Android website), since iPhone X, iPhone displays remain the best because of color accuracy, lack of widespread color management on Android, and lack of black clipping. It remains the ONLY display that garners A+ rating on XDA…and IS the standard by which they grade other Android displays.

Create desktop experience? Like the stupid Dex thing?! LOL…good luck with that. Look at all the high-end productivity app on iOS that takes advantage of the processor….and compare that to the 2nd rate apps on Android.

Didn’t Android 11 cripple multi-tasking on Samsung phones? Oh yes it did! I think that Android 11 also cripple multi-tasking in general. LOL…didn’t think that i knew that, did you?! 😀

Dated? I don’t know…selling like hot cakes…even overtaking Samsung worldwide i think last quarter. Widely accepted as a genius design move by Apple. I wonder how many Android OEMs will copy 12 this year!

It is THE perfect phone For reasons i already stated. Tom’s Guide (who is very particular) agrees.

Theres so much ridiculous stuff here I almost dont know where to start.

First, iPhone has the best display? Is that why pretty much every reviewer each year says the latest Galaxy/Note phone is the best smartphone display? And all the head-to-heads on tech sites have Samsung winning in the display category? It has a higher resolution, adaptive refresh, higher peak nits. The only place the iphone wins is in color accuracy and even thats pretty close (both in low 80s).

Also, I dont see anything on XDA that says the iPhone is the standard in which they measure displays and its their top rated smartphone display. Link?

Saying Dex is "stupid" then touting all the "high-end productivity" apps on iOS....you've got to be having a laugh here. So you think the iOS apps and the iPhone can replicate Dex for productivity? If so, you dont understand technology or you're just incredible inefficient with your productivity. And this is coming from someone that doesnt even think Dex is all that great.

But the best, the absolute best, is you criticizing android's multitasking. As someone who is clearly an avid iPhone user, to say android multitasking is bad or has been crippled is just comical considering iPhone has basically the lowest form of multitasking in smartphones (no split window, finally got picture in picture somewhat). Also, if you watch most of the stupid multitasking head-to-head videos, the S21 Ultra wins in keeping apps in memory.

Trying to brag the iPhone can go the deepest underwater is such a reach but Im glad you added it. Made me laugh. Yep, if you plan on deep sea diving with a phone, the Iphone is the phone for you.

Oh and calling Apples failure to really upgrade anything on the iPhone 12 besides flat sides and calling it genius is just the best. Its why they make so much money. They have people like you convinced they are getting a new, innovative device when in reality they still have the same dated notch and low refresh display.

As for what OEMs will copy Apple this year, I'm sure a lot. Thats pretty common across the board in the smartphone industry. Where do you think Apple got the idea for the pulldown quick settings? Or the nested notifications? Or their new "innovative" widgets?

This is a dumb conversation thats been made over and over but really comes down to preference. But when people start saying opinions as facts, it should be corrected.

As I've said before, my friend has iPhone SE 2020 that she recently purchased and I wanted to get one too. So we did the exact same things on our phone and her phone died before mine did and I'm using $100 Motorola phone.

That would explain it. The iPhone SE 2020 is essentially the same battery wise as the old iPhone 6. It is terrible, no question. It’s the older Plus models, and the newer models other than the mini that have phenomenal battery lives.


Best alternative, I’d still say the Pixel 5 or one I tried that I loved and is relatively cheap, is the Pixel 4a 5G. Really, really nice phone and for relatively cheap. It doesn’t have the top spec processor, but unless you’re doing a lot of gaming, you won’t notice. Camera is excellent, battery life is excellent too (on par with my 12 Pro Max). The back is “plastic” but it feels really good to the touch. Not sure what Google did with it there, but it just works. The screen is also gorgeous. It’s not on par with Samsung’s new flagships, but frankly it’s comparable to the regular iPhone 12 and 12 Pro except for screen brightness, and it’s rear Touch ID is super quick, works every time, and isn’t dependent on FaceID at a time when we’re all wearing masks.

Another shout out for Oppo here. They make superb devices. I recently picked up an Oppo Find X2 Neo for £389 from Amazon UK and it is just inconceivable that you can buy a phone as good as this for less than an iPhone SE 2020 with a seven year old design.

5G, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB storage and a gorgeous, eye-popping 90 Hz OLED screen. Charging is crazy fast and the build is superb, all metal and glass. But the real killer feature at this price point are the cameras, complete with Oppo's outstanding AI.

I'm not kidding when I say it takes flagship level photographs and you get ultrawide, standard and optical zoom to boot, all with OIS (including for video). On top of that, there's a 2-year UK warranty.

The Android midrange really is full of fantastic devices these days.

Oppo is surely flashy on their presentation and ads. But unfortunately a lot of it are just skin deep. ColorOS is one of the messiest Android skin I've encountered. It's worse than MiUI imo. And hopefully they got it fixed now, but a few years back, ColorOS is the only Android skin I found that cannot work with GSuite Work Profile. It's like they skipped some security/encryption features on basic Android. Even MiUI back then supports GSuite Work Profile just fine.

All the specs are just specs. And actually if you want the best spec for the buck, Xiaomi is still the winner. Oppo is overpriced for what they offer. For the price you mentioned, you can get the Poco F2 Pro which has Snapdragon 865.

I think "overpriced" is stretching it, especially when we're comparing to iPhones. 🙂 But the Poco F2 Pro is great value - unfortunately that comes with tricky UK warranty (there's an EU model, but since Brexit we're not in it anymore) so the customer support is iffy. Plus the RRP is actually £499. You're looking at the grey market for closer to the X2 Neo price. The 865 is better, but it has a 60Hz display and cameras that are arguably worse - so horses for courses.

ColorOS is waaay better now. It's much cleaner, with little to no bloatware. Even Facebook can be uninstalled (which you can't do on Samsung devices). I agree it used to be rough as guts but is closer to OxygenOS now IMO.

The great thing is that there are some phenomenal devices all within £50-100 of each other. That's a far cry from Apple, where you're looking at double these amounts (or more) for similar features.

I agree with you on the £150-250 market; it's just crazy what's out there for such low prices. Realme are also killing it in this price bracket. Just insane value for money for less than a used iPhone 7.

I've only tried Oppo Reno 4 Pro and I thought it was awesome. Yo ucould customize it any way you want and I liked ColorOS and so do many others. You can customize it however you want and there are so many options and possibilities.

The Reno 4 Pro has a virtually identical spec to the X2 Neo but is currently £650 on Amazon wheras the Neo is £389. It's a strange anomaly. Also Oppo, Xiaomi etc have baffling numbers of phones with almost identical specs; they then have even more under their other Poco, OnePlus, Realme etc brand names.

I guess I'm not quite sure what that article is trying to say. They could have made it much shorter by saying "Samsung no longer gives money to DxO, so they rated it poorly".

Normally I'd agree, and I will admit that the zoom absolutely covers up some issues, mainly that the shutter speed is still too slow resulting in too many blurry pics, but it's a phenomenal camera and easily equal to iPhones.

Thats a weird article. Its basically tomsguide saying we thought the S21 Ultra camera was great but DXOMark rated it behind the 12 Pro Max.

As for DxO, its been discussed here already. They're a joke. Look no further than some of their previous "best camera" phones being OnePlus models which everyone knows how trash cameras. Its a pay to win system there.

As for the s21 Ultra camera vs the 12 Pro Max camera, from my experience they have different pros and cons but overall match up about equal which a slight edge going to the 12 Pro Max. I think the 12 Pro Max wins in color accuracy, shutter speed, and video (but a lot of videos show the S21 Ultra with superior stabilization). The s21 Ultra wins in anything above 2x zoom, macro, wide angle. Both are going to take good picture in good lighting.

What’s so surprising? Xiaomi made the Poco X3, which is cheaper than this, and it has 120Hz IPS screen. 😀

You should have watched Xiaomi’s announcement for this. Xiaomi made this to compete directly with the Galaxy A71. This is Xiaomi’s method. Pick a competitor, and basically design a phone that will out spec the competitor for the dollar. It’s fun watching Xiaomi’s keynotes. 🙂

That’s a bit of a broad brush statement. I’m not a fan of the phone referenced either, but there are a good number of decent cheap android phones. Some examples include the Pixel 4a (and 4a 5G), a bunch of Motorola phones, the Samsung A series phones, and the Samsung S20 Fan Edition, which kills the iPhone 7/8 functionality wise for the price. Again, I am an iPhone user.

Doesn’t make sense buying a pixel 5 in Australia, when for a extra $350 you can get a flagship iPhone 12 with better build quality, flagship processor, better specs in every way and longer software updates. Pixel 5 is over priced for the processor it’s using.

Truth of the matter is that a lot of Android phones are better than iPhones. Even the cameras are better let alone battery lives.
I can go out with my $100 Motorola phone without worrying that the battery will run out and my friend can't go out on her $500 iPhone SE without worrying that the battery will run out.
Battery is the most important to me when it comes to phones.

This is one of the reasons I use both an S21 Ultra and iPhone 12 PM.
They both take great pictures. But my iPhone cannot compete with Samsung on zoom right now.
