Best alternative to Protube ?

I think the options for alternatives are limited. Apple are currently cleaning up loads of third party YouTube apps in the App Store after Google requested them to as I understood.
You might probably find some but no guarantee that these will keep working.
For now ProTube still works fine on my iDevices where I installed the app.

Sad to hear they were removed. I currently have a backup saved as .ipa from the 2.5.9 version. It was created as I explained here:

I hope it continues to work as it is now, and in future iOS versions there isn't any issue.
It's because of things like that I am not inclined to buy anything and always want things for free even if it means pirating. If we can't be sure our paid stuff will continue to work *, if we are enslaved to the whims of these companies and can't even create a backup, then what's the point?

I stopped supporting this mafia a long time ago and only made a few purchases from the Apple-Store. When I see these things I regret even these few. And I never jailbroken any of my devices... this is our reward for doing things right.
Sorry, Google, even others who disagree with me won't pay for your stuff, the reason we opted for ProTube was precisely due to your s.hitty apps and the many free alternatives that despite their efforts, are filled with limitation. And even them are removed or might stop working... tomorrow.
If you can't create anything good and want to continue shoving down our throats what you think we should accept, you'll get nowhere. The Youtube app is banned for good from my iOS devices.

What pissed me off the most, Safari on Mac stoped supporting YouTube videos above 1440p. While on Chrome, I can play 4K videos on 720p laptop monitor.
I don't own a Mac or MacBook...yet, I have a 5 year old Dell laptop but, this is a dumb decision by Apple. Unless they will bring back 4K support in Safari in High Sierra as a new feature. Which it's self is infuriating.
I'm trying to enjoy new to me Apple ecosystem, instead I'm running in to these little speed bumps that makes me want to hurt someone at Apple.

4K seems to work for me on a Mac using Sierra. Which OS are you using?
Have you tried with Safari Technology Preview?

I was at local Microcenter a month ago looking at 2017 MacBook Pro. I was trying to watch 4k videos using Safari but, it did not have a YouTube option for 4k videos. So I had to download Chrome so I could watch watch 4k YouTube videos.
Same issue on 2017 iPad using YouTube app. 4k videos can only be viewed at 1440p.

nPlayer is not an alternative since works pretty much like Safari

But when you issue a command for the video to go fullscreen, it's like if you are watching a local file. I used nPlayer yesterday to correct the aspect ratio from this video:
I only had to select 2:39:1 in the nPlayer settings for that to happen. This was never possible with ProTube. Also, we can do this:

I’ve tried CornerTube and OverPicture since ProTube got taken down. So far my vote is on CornerTube. Basically what you do is open whatever you want to PiP in the regular YouTube app, then “share” it via the YouTube share sheet to CornerTube. The video then opens in CornerTube with a button handy to PiP. It’s a few extra steps but works so far for me.
OverPicture works very similarly, except with that app you open the video in YouTube in Safari, not the built in app, and like CornerTube it gives you a share sheet icon that then minimizes the video in the corner. The issue I have for this is that, as someone who has a lot of open Safari tabs at once, videos tend to time out for me if i don’t revisit the main Safari page pretty frequently.

Why blame Apple when it's Google that want its propriety to be standard. Safari supports all standard formats.
You can even get PiP when play YouTube in Safari unlike Google's YouTube app that forces you to watch ads, but yeah let's blame Apple.
The solution to this Google greed should be using YouTube as less as possible.
ProTube is beginning to fail, now it asks multiple times for me to sign into my Google account again, when I click to see my subscriptions. Even though the app is gone I always felt it needed to have the changes I explained before, so I hope someday there's a similar but better app for the task.
The bug from subscriptions appear to be gone for now, at least.
One thing I noticed is that with iOS 11 we can't swipe up to adjust the volume, fine tuning until we are satisfied with the volume levels. We always have to minimize all the screens first, otherwise we will only see the Dock instead.
In iOS 10 (which I will continue to use, 10.3.2, in my new IPP 10.5) we are still able to do this. It could be easily remedied if we had the same custom gestures from nPlayer, which not only do that, but skip forward and backwards the contents we watch, something ProTube can do, but it requires us to to do this in the bottom part of the screen, not the middle, and it's really a downside if we compare to the way nPlayer custom gestures work to facilitate this command.

I am testing tubex and at least background Feature Works. Funny thing though. iPad keeps credentials so no register everytime, iPhone does not
The Tubex apps I could find in the App Store didn't have background playback. It does seem that one didn't have ads between videos but in the app there is an ad banner though. Others (e.g. YTB Player) that I found had background playback but still an ad.
