IMO, instead of wasting time on such a dead subject, a much more interesting thread would be when (not if) the first X virus hits and how are we going to deal with it.
:D

Nothing, I once heard that OS-X cannot get a virus??? Sounds a little bit of a stretch but the fact that not many people use any type of AV protection then it plays into the theory of them not getting them?? idk someone inform me please:confused:

No, not so much viruses. But there are phishing trojans out there targeting Macs. They usually post as video codecs required to play certain streamed videos (TV shows, porn). But if you never install any codec then it won't matter.

Even when I was using Windows, I very rarely used my antivirus - well I only installed it when I thought something dodgy was going on. I knew it though, it happened when I went on dodgy torrent sites and all those pop ups appeared - I knew something wasn't right.

Just keep to bay and dont watch porn lol

i use clam av just to keep my windows friends safe. I don't want to be the middleman to a virus to them and being the one that gives them a virus. :D

This is really the only reason currently to run anti-virus software on a Mac. That may very well change in the future if Mac gets enough market share to be worth it for the virus writers.

My family has used macs since they first came out in the 80's. We currently have 3 macs and none of them have needed anti virus. My uncle has had his alum iMac now for a year and it's fine. Before that he had an iMac for 6 years and it was fine. My grandpa uses 2 macs and has never had a virus. My grandma and grandpa have had macs for at least 5 years and no virus

Incidentally, this article was just released to discuss this very matter.

Bottomline, AV not needed, but doesn't hurt to have it.

I don't use antivirus on my Macbook OR my Windows Vista notebook OR my Windows XP notebook. My desktop machines don't have it either. Machines have been clean for years. Just have to be smart about what you install on your machine and what sites you visit.

If you really need something, I'd go for Little Snitch. ;)

A good firewall (router) and software firewall (OS X) should be enough. If you need extra protection, get something like Little Snitch. It's cheaper than most of the AV available out there and will let you know *every* Internet connection that comes into your system.

...Bottomline, AV not needed, but doesn't hurt to have it.

Well, I guess it's a question of point of view (system performance wise... ;))

well i don't know cause i will own my very first mac next week Monday(can't wait) but for the pass few days i've been reading a lot of reports saying APPLE the manufacture of Mac computers and OSX themselves are RECOMMENDING mac users to start using antivirus on their systems . Now i bought this system very expensive and i wouldn't want anything happening to it i could of prevented, soo if Apple is saying to do it then i will.

Apple doesn't specifically suggest you need anything... I think, your missing the point here a little. Personally, I'd only recommend and anti-virus solution IF and only IF you have Window boxes on the same network, or your planning to install Windows as a Bootcamp or Virtual OS. Otherwise, just for get it, no anti-virus is required.

Newly installed applications would need your conformation before they're allowed to run, on the first install. You'd have to be a complete fool to type in your system password, if you not installed anything..

I've been using Macs since they've been conceived, still don't use any anti-virus on my of my systems. I can guarantee you, there are many users here who's agree.

"When Steve Jobs takes the stage, the anticipation is so thick you can cut it with the knife you slice the bread with that CEO Steve is currently the best thing since. "

Truly the veneration of the magi. I love religious people. But... I worry too. Just don't go blowing yourself up or anything will you now? :)

What's Wrong?

im rather new to the mac game, been using them for school and finally got my own.

Here's my problem. ive been using safari and its been running smooth as always and recently for the past two days on which ever network im on either school or home its SUPER sluggish, takes at least 45 seconds to load even macrumors.com. Im sure i never downloaded anything that isint supposed to be on my system. After reseting safari, and having it closed and all that junk i honestly dont know what or why its so slow or whats bogging it down.

how can i at least run some sort of a check on my machine to make sure that there isint anything hiding around in places i dont want it to. or what other steps should i take too fix this problem. nothing else seems to be wrong. my apps like photoshop and indesign work fluid just this crappy safari is running slow as a mother. please help anyone whose up for the challenge. thanks.

Try downloading a maintenance app called OnyX see if that helps

whoever mentioned norton is an virus in itself is right. Use firefox with no script thats all you really need.

I've read about this so called OnyX, and it seems as its just a little program that fixes and tightens things up. but what i really want to know is will i have to reinstall apps and files and such. should you recommend backing everything up on to time machine and then playing with the program.

when i do boot OnyX what settings should i play with or is there any specific fixes that can be run for such a problems as a slowed down safari.

thanks again for all your help.

best osx antivirus

I see some users getting the osx DNS trojan and now apple recommend antivirus software. Is there something like avg or nod32 for osx?

Oynx wont screw up any apps but just make a backup before you start to fiddle with it as thats what they recommend. just use Automation and select everything and then reboot. things will seem slow at first as applications need to re-cache. just open youre most used apps and then reboot again.

its good to see that large anti virus corps are getting behind OS X and Apple are alerting users. who knows what will happen in the future? and theres nothing wrong with being prepared.

but my advice still stays that anti virus is not needed atm. most, if not all, or any viruses that a Mac user will come across can only excecute in a Windows environment so they will stay dormant in OS X. if a user downloads a Mac trojan (not a virus BTW), which are around atm, simple user awareness should be used and not give theyre password to an unknown installer or application.

Let's Not Split Hairs

My Mac may not have a virus, but some of the Word documents that I edit with Office 2004 have become infected with the W97M.Thus.A virus. So far I've gotten the runaround from Apple ("the problem isn't with Apple software"), Microsoft ("ooh, that's bad. Maybe you could delete all the infected files and start over") and Norton ("maybe you should try Apple").

Please don't lecture me about only using Apple word processing and other Apple products. That isn't practical.

The documents open fine. They just won't get through virus filters. After a few days of waiting for a response last week, I discovered that the recipient had never gotten the email. Some virus scanners strip out the virus, others hold it up. An interesting note: sending the documents through my Mobile Me account cleaned the virus. The problem there is that I'm not using Mobile Me as the enterprise solution with my blackberry.

That said - does anyone have a way to clean these files? I don't know which ones are infected.
