Best audio coverters

What are the best free audio converters out there ? apart from itunes

Apparently when iTunes encounters an error it doesn't skip and continue, it just stops, so i'm after alternatives.

I don't think I've had iTunes do that to me before..
Anyway, I've used xACT to good effect before. Seems fine to me.
