I personally want to thank everyone who has provided input and insight. I went ahead and spent a few extra hundred bucks and got a Canon 60D. It comes with a EF-S 18-135mm IS lens. I really like the feel of the camera.. The Nikons were nice but what I wanted wasn't in my price range. This camera had great reviews, new on the market, and a very nice feeling camera in my hands. Which is really most important to me because of my long fingers. Will post pictures soon I will be getting the camera tomorrow in the mail hopefully. 😀

Is there anything that I should go ahead and pick up for my camera before the semester starts guys? I keep seeing the lens filters, etc.
I'm getting a bag tomorrow to cary my gear in. Would yall recommend a backpack or shoulder sling type case? Waterproof or not?

Something like a lenshood or a UV filter for the lens is recommended as added protection (it prevents scratching the lens, very useful when walking around in crowds and such).
Other things would be basic stuff like a cleaning set and a bag for your gear. You can buy cleaning sets from a lot of different places so that shouldn't be a problem. A bag however is again something personal. Some like backpacks, some like slingshots, some like shoulder bags, some don't like bags and use things like a blackrapid/sun sniper strap, spiderholster, etc. What type of bag and the size also rely on what gear you're bringing. A Crumpler Jimmy Bo 400 is a great bag for a dslr (without grip!) and 1 standard zoom lens. When going out for a day it's a great bag for your standard 60D with the 18-135mm lens. If you want to carry around a second lens or a bigger lens you need something else. Therefore you need to bring along the gear you want to carry around and try to fit it into the various bags. Then see if it's comfy or not.
Waterproof bag is always recommended. You're carrying an expensive piece of electronics that doesn't mix with water. With light drizzle it will keep your gear safe; you'll get soaked when you have to walk for some time and so will your dslr (which it does not like).
