If you ain't got the shops nearby I'd suggest visiting Musicians friend online (google it) don't go for the cheapest out of their catalog add a couple hundred to the price for the cheapest shown then search for one that's that much more and go for the one at that price then you'll get something fairly decent for a beginner.

Say you see the cheapest 6 string acoustic online there for 199 look for the 399 dollar models and take your pick--believe it or not when it comes to most of guitars the money you pay matters when it comes to craftsmanship which when it comes to musical instruments is important to sound quality.

Or you could hit the local pawn shop and get a great deal on something used, but you might have to pay a lutier either way to get it set up properly.

So, I went to the music store today. I looked at pretty much everything they had under a grand. I ended up not seeing any big difference with all of the models. I know there are huge differences, I just don't know what I'm looking for and the friend I brought along just said go with what feels right. With that said, I liked the Takamine S35. They had a used one for the same price as a new one on Amazon, with no budge on price.

I decided to go with the new one on Amazon, although I know used (broken-in) guitars are sometimes better and I'm getting a guitar that I have no idea how it feels. But, like I said, I don't have a problem upgrading when I know what I'm doing more and my Amazon credit covered the complete purchase price. My cousin also gave me the go ahead on the S35, over the S34, so it feels good that it was confirmed by someone that does this for a living.

So, hopefully, in about 3 months I'll be coming back on here asking for advice on better guitars.

Until then, I'll be looking into instructional books, watching youtube videos, finding a class or two, and throwing out my guitar hero.

Thank you all for all your help.

I used http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm when first starting out...it's not amazing but I liked it because they have audio clips of some things that make it easier to grasp. In between practicing the basics I also pulled up tabs via google for every song I could think of and tried to play what I could. It's great to find a couple of really easy songs that you can really work on and have something to show for all of your practice. Good luck and have fun!

Congratulations!

Post back when you get the guitar, and when you feel stuck with playing and where to go next, there are plenty here that play on regular basis and people that play usually likes talking about it :)

So, in an effort to cut costs I have decided to take a break from golf. I was spending A LOT of money.

After cutting my rounds down from about 12 a month, I'm now playing only 2 rounds a month.

But, I'm noticing an increase of time where I literally have nothing to do. I need a hobby that will challenge me and take up some time and I can't think of anything better than picking up the guitar.

The brief research I've done shows high praise for the Seagull S6, but I'm unsure if I want to make a 400 dollar investment.

Any suggestions and it'd be even better if it were available on Amazon, because I have some credit that would make this purchase even easier to swallow?

I'd also love some instructional book advice, if you have any experience with them.

Just about a month ago, I went to Guitar Center and bought a brand new Seagull Original S6 Dreadnought. It was $415 after tax, and it was by far the best money I have ever spent on a guitar in my life. It is a real beauty. Like you, I am a beginner, but have caught on to guitar playing so fast that playing lots of songs has come really easy for me!

If it's one guitar you are going to buy and intend to keep for a while, by all means don't hesitate to buy that model if you haven't set your eyes on one for sure yet. The Canadian build quality is out of this world.
