Hi thought this might be the best place to put this but feel free to move it to a more appropriate forum.

Looking for the best book(s)/ reference for hardware design for iPhone/ iPad.

is it best to use the doc connector?
I've seen a few devices that use the headphone/ microphone jack but that
    just seems wacky to me..

    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks
    Ian

It's that way because Apple won't let you publish apps to the App Store that use the Dock connector for much without extensive (and possibly expensive) work.

There is one book I am aware of, but IIRC it is quite out of date. Let me see if I can find the link.

EDIT: This isn't the one I was looking for, but it does have some info apparently in Chapter 12. http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596516642

I think there are a few articles in the iOS tech Q&A on the iOS dev center
