Vote for the best browser for mac

One big edge Firefox has is that it allows me to work with some sites that only work with IE and not Safari. Big bonus.

I can't use Safari since it's incompatible with Movable Type 3.3, which is where I spend most of my day. That's why my vote goes to Firefox.

I think NetScape was really the only "browser for the platform"

Sadly polls like this are often put up by people who are new to the platform... any one who has been a user of Mac OS X dating back to before it was called Mac OS X can recall a time when the only browser for the platform was OmniWeb.

Oh well, I guess these days it'll just have to settle for the best browser for the platform (along with being the oldest browser on the platform).

I haven't come across a website that doesn't work with Safari in three years.

Maybe not websites in general, but websites that are coded for data manipulation, upkeep and such. My son's high school booster club for one, our local real estate MLX system for another. It's not many, but when someone codes a site just for IE, they screw over a lot of other folks.

I love safari 3 beta and it's search function (no fugly dialogue box like in Safari 2). Oh, and when dragging a tab from the tab bar it shows a preview ... nice.

Although firefox has had something similar for a while, in Mac OSX.4 I find the whole browser slow and just un-macish. (It rules on Windows though).

I know I also love this function, but firefox did it better, and I miss that and wish safari would get it

you didnt have to press control f, you could just start typing and it would find it

Which function, the guy mentioned 2 or 3.

If you meant the Find, if you haven't used it on Safari yet, you are missing out. It is pretty much the best I have ever seen. Plus, once you add inquisitor and Safari-AdBlock to the mix, I have an excellent, excellent browser that is fast, integrates perfectly with the OS, and doesn't give me ads!

I voted for Safari 3 not necessarily because I think it is the best browser, but because I'm huge on UI and OS consistency. Safari 3, obviously, is built for OS X, and is a full Cocoa application that can use the OS services, like system wide grammar/spelling check, iCal/Mail integration, etc. Personally, I prefer Camino and Opera 9, but even Camino just doesn't seem to be as fast or as smooth as Safari 3. Maybe when the next major release of Camino comes out (which hopefully will be built fully for Leopard), I'll give it a second try.

I actually flat out hate Firefox on OS X, but I'm willing to give it another try once Firefox 3 is released. It's supposed to integrate much better with OS X than do the current releases.

I've got All three on my machine now.

Firefox, Camino and Safari Version 2.0.4 (419.3).

I've got OS X Version 10.4.10...and now considering switching to Leopard.

I was never really Wowed by Safari. I did a little search on line about other browsers and was led to Camino...which was supposedly written specifically for Macs. ( I have an Intel 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro.)

First problem I found with Safari was that it barely supported GMail...especially the graphics and live on line buddy list, which they admitted to and supposedly was working on.

I was looking at the SciFi channels site with Camino and found that it didn't support Flash video, even if you downloaded the viewer.

Another frustrating thing that happened with Camino is that somehow my Bookmarks feature set of saved and default bookmarks became corrupted, I had to rebuild them one at a time.

So......just upgrade to Leopard and take the newer Safari 3...is this a beta?...or better?

I use Safari most of the time for a few basic reasons:

1) Loads faster then Firefox
2) GUI matchs the OS
3) I love the select boxes
4) I love how bookmarks are done, easy to organize and search
5) Sync my bookmarks with .Mac and my iPhone.
6) I like the download status in my stacks.
7) I like how RSS feeds are displayed

whoever said safari is the clear winner for fastest browser needs to explain their methodology. for rendering html, opera is the hands-down winner in any test.

besides that, they have evolutionary browser features like tabbed browsing, tab previews on mouse-over, mouse gestures, clutter-free address bar, etc YEARS before any other browser.

on top of all that, they support "extensions" jsut as well as firefox.

the limiting factor was the slightly clunky default interface and not quite 100% interoperability with all websites, but both those issues have been addressed recently.

the new opera is beautiful AND fast, and i dont know why everyone else doesn't use it too.

Opera 9 certainly looks better on Mac OS X, but that's it. It still can't use OS services, and thus, I don't find it as useful as Safari, OmniWeb, Camino or Shiira.

Speaking of Shiira, I like it a lot, but what's up with development? Is it still ongoing?

ok, so you got me there :p

and i like shiira too, but there are just too manky kinks that haven't been worked out yet. it has a lot of potential, but as you noted the development has really been slacking :/

I feel no need to even investigate anything else, since Firefox does everything I need with its marvelous extensions.

I tried Safari once, right when I first booted up my iMac.. Then it was straight to Mozilla...

Mac Browsers

I really want o love Safari but I've find that it lacks so many basic features, so for those that voted Safari can you pls let me know what features you like about Safari? It seems that so many ppl love Safari although it doesn't have:-
- Adblocking
- Ability to add other search pages
- Ability to change each page preference
- Ability to move tabs once opened

I can't think of anymore at this stage but I just find it a bit  but I really want to use it so can ppl recommend must have add-ons to make Safari a function able browser? Another thing I downloaded Safari 3.0 beta on my Tiger and it did nothing but crash :(

- Don't care.
- Google's all I need.
- Don't need.
- Can do that, but don't use tabs.

-Safari 3 + Safari-AdBlock
-Inquisitor (then try to tell me that Firefox has a better Search bar :))
-?
-Safari 3 (you also get a preview when moving tabs out of the tab bar, and can pop tabs out as new windows)

A lot of your issues are with Safari 2 (which I didn't use, I used FF until Safari 3 came out) which is no longer the default. Although Safari isn't quite as extensible as Firefox, Firefox doesn't have adblocking either out of the box... so not sure where your complaint is there... i guess you didn't look hard enough (ie failed to make even one google search) and therefore failed to find the 4+ different adblocking solutions for safari.

I like Safari because with AdBlock and Inquisitor, I have all the features that most complain about with Safari, and it is fast, and integrates with the OS. Much more so than Mr. Memory Leak Firefox (had horrendous ones on my install)

did I suggest to pin a topic like this at the top?

we do have so much resource for these type of weekly poll?

Safari 3. I love Firefox on Windows, but to me, it's feels unfinished and kind of clunky on OS X.

I actually have done a Google search but unfortunately most of the "add-ons" that are recommended you have to purchase, I've got no problems in putting "extensions" to do ad-block and add certain features but I don't think that we should have to pay for it.

As you said most of my problems have been with Safari 2.0 and you weren't using it so therefore you are probably not familiar with the issues ;) Many I find get a bit touchy with the browser war happening and that's why I stated that I WANT to use Safari as I want it to integrate well with my OS and the rest of my Apple apps but I have downloaded Safari 3.0 and it was just way buggy and constantly crashed and was worse than 2.0 in terms of it crashing and loading up slowly. So my post was to basically seek for any recommendations of the features I'm seeking and how to gain such features as this is what I find important in my browsing needs.

Those list of features weren't a "complaint" but as a note so that if ppl knew how to gain those features without having to pay for add-on's I'm all ears cos like I said...once again...I WANT to make SAFARI my main browser :D

Well, pithhelmet is to the best of my knowledge the only for-pay adblocker out there. You can get SafariBlock which is free, Safari-AdBlock (Leopard and Safari 3 only i think), and there are a couple others as well that are free.

Inquisitor should work with Safari 2, but don't quote me on that, as for being able to move the tabs.... there may be a plugin that allows for that as well. Since you are on Tiger, you may want to check out TabExpose.... looks pretty nifty (fails to install under Leopard)
