I know some GREAT computer designers that prefer IE over firefox

heh, Just to let you know any web designer has to go out of his/her way to make pages look right in IE... All the hacks, etc. It quickly gets very frustrating.

Man, no kidding. What's really frustrating is when I've coded to a standard that MS explicitly says it supports, and then it turns out their implementation is buggy.

For a specific example: There's a property that MS actually came up with called "innerHTML" - while it's not yet a standard (it's under consideration) both Mozilla and Safari have already incorporated it because it's really handy. So I'm coding some forms using Firefox since the JavaScript console is so darn useful. Well everything works in Firefox, and it works in Safari. But I go over to IE 6 and it doesn't work as planned. IE's implementation is limited - it doesn't always work if it's used inside of a table element. MS even has a page up in their knowledgebase, explaining why it doesn't work - but the bottom line is THEY invented this property and THEY don't even fully support it as defined by themselves!

i use firefox on my mac, my windows and my linux machines

little tip for using firefox:

type about:config in the address bar

scroll down to network.http.pipelining and set to "true"
then set the value of the pipelining to 8 instead of the default 4

speeds it up no end basically because you are doubling the number of requests you send to a website to receive data

Yeah, I'm a total mac user of course, but I was wondering if there was a browser I could recommend to my computer illiterate PC friends in college. Thanks.

Well, my son is running a PC with XP. I'm using a G5 and both are on a wireless network. I'm using Mozilla and love it. Has both browser and email together and they are tight. Lots of skins and it's pretty solid. My son is using FireFox on his PC and loves it. Says that he doesn't need integrated email as he has a hotmail account. Don't think you would go wrong with either FireFox or Mozilla. If you want integrated email go with Mozilla. Browser alone, FireFox. Popup blocking works great. Cheers

I personally think firefox is a little faster. You can always get thunderbird if you need email.

I've got Mozilla on my PeeCee, but that is because I didn't trust the first public relase of Firefox, named Firebird at that point. IE is for updating windows...odd how that ONLY works in IE?

I use Safari on my Macs, but on an old System 8.6 Mac I use a form of Mozilla that will run. And I got my friend hooked on Firefox, who used to hate anything Apple-related or non-Microsoft. :D

And I know that I shouldn't be beating up a 13 year old kid, but cmon, even my 10 year old sister can debate better than that!

Its not really odd. Many people complain that ms integrates ie with the os. Well, one advantage to this is being able to update your computer through ie. Is it a better option that not useing a brower at all, like os x? That is debate for another time.

That is one point where I not going to hit MS on. I think it a perficly fine and a good idea that the make updating Windows in IE only. It much easier for MS to keep it secure and keep it safer (THe less they have to deal with the better this is MS). Plus it easier to get it to run for on there computer.

Apple way well came out of the fact that they had to update there computer but they never really had there own browser even when OSX started so they had to go about another way of keeping upto date.

Mozilla and firefox 1.0PR are pretty much the same speed for browsing the web since they both run off the exact same webbrowsing engine. Mozzilla just has other stuff ingegated into it and if you want or like it all ingrated use Mozzilla. Browser only use firefox.

Also I might like to had firefox is the 3rd name for the browser. It started out a Pheniox then move to firebird and then to firefox (both changes where due to legeal and coping right issues).

To be honest I use firefox as my main browse and I have seen 0 speed diffences bettween the 2 and that is accross 3 diffence computers ranging from brand new to 5 years old. I tend to notic the biggest limiting factor in speed is the speed of the internet conectoin

ive just discovered netscape 7.2! i really like the tabbed browsing implementation (better than ff imo) and i use it for all my ftp stuff cause the dl manager's better. not to mention it has built-in irc support thru chatzilla without getting a plugin-extension. still have ff as my default tho

Netscape is built off of firefox.

Better because...?
it has a new tab button on the bar for when i dont want to take my hand off the mouse, and since i dont always have a scroll wheel mouse w/ me i can ctrl+click to open a link in a new tab.

try the other way around. Firefox is based off of netscape

No, I was correct with what I said. But so are you. I'll explain:
Mozilla was built off Netscape. Netscape stopped being developed directly. Instead, only Mozilla/Firefox developeds further. But how do new versions of Netscape come to being? Well, when its time for a new Netscape build, they take the code almost directly from the newest stable Mozilla/Firefox and make Netscape.

There actually is a lot more to it, but you can see that the older versions of netscape were the fathers of Mozilla/Firefox, but the newer versions of Netscape are the children of Mozilla/Firefox.

For FF: View > Toolbars > Customize... drag New Tab icon to toolbar.
