A app store gift card has a value of exactly $0.00, while a $100 gift card to best buy is prob worth $60-$75. If they'll still match the student discount price(I have no idea), then having to show your receipt at the door is a small price to pay to get a gift card thats actually useful.

Why would you say that? I sold mine for $96.

Just bought a MBP from BB two weeks ago. I am a school employee and asked them for the $100 gift card and they gave it to me.

It worked out well, I took the gift card and bought the 8GB memory upgrade I wanted from their website. So it was kind of like a free RAM upgrade!

Also, they didn't push to hard on anything extra, like software or warranty. I just told them all I wanted was the MBP and a VGA adapter and I was out.

The 13" i7 was also on sale for $75 off.

While it's very popular to bash Best Buy, once you get past the idea that you are buying a computer from a discount store, there is nothing different about it. If you use Best Buy points, and they are giving you $100, why not? I almost did it, except that they don't sell the top of the line 15" MBP with AG screen.

Polbit

I bought my MBP at BB a few months ago, they matched the education discount (asked to see my ID) and it was otherwise the exact same unopened MBP I would have gotten from the Apple store. They didn't press us to buy any warranties or anything, and we got a significant chunk of rewardzone points. I would do it again.

From what I see here (not you) is that sometimes, you're just going to have the person who just hates a store because they feel a certain way or they had a bad experience there. That's cool, I understand that.

Making a sweeping statement about a company just because you have one or a couple of bad experiences in stores "with PEOPLE" doesn't make sense. Logical sense. That's like hating McDonalds because I go in there on an off morning and it takes me 20 minutes to get my food (I'm sure everyone has had this happen at one point in time).

You're interacting with people. Who work retail. They aren't rocket scientists and they aren't perfect. None of us are. Yes some stores and companies are pushy when it comes to warranties, add ons, and unreasonable purchases (We had one two years ago trying to buy stuff from BB on Black Friday) but that doesn't mean the entire company is to blame.

If you're upset, write a letter specifically stating the store number, the location, and what the person's name was. If that's too much trouble, speak to the manager on duty. No use coming here and spreading your unhappiness.

If theft is an option, why not just steal the computer too? Way better than $100 off - you get 100% off! Nothing is cheaper than free.

What do you mean theft? The owners of the pirate bay pick up the tab for whatever is downloaded; they have to be über rich, but what they choose to do with their money is none of my business. That's why I don't get why to use the app store, when there's an alternative choice with someone else paying the bill.

... wait what? You're joking right? I can't detect the sarcasm.

Who, Best Buy? There is a Best Buy app installed on Windows machines (all the other bloatware/crapware is installed by the manufacturer. But my Mac I purchased at Best Buy (we don't have an Apple Store yet, and shipping to Alaska sucks) came with only the included software, no addons at all.

Both Macs I've purchased at Best Buy came with zero bloatware. A refreshing change from Windows PC's

Nope, not joking at all; I know, I can't believe it either that there's this great of an app store, and being backed by a group of people who are so generous. I know there was an article that detailed how it worked better than I have and listed a few of the main contributors(one was some billionaire from southern Maine if I'm not mistaken), I'm trying to find it now but having trouble. If anyone else knows the link I'm referring to can they post it, please?

Receipt checking is offensive because you're assuming that your customers are thieves. It's guilty until proven innocent by checking my reciept. I don't submit to reciept checks and I don't do business with retailers who perform such idiotic and insulting loss prevention techniques. It's not my job as a customer to prove I bought something. It's your job to prove I stole something and then call the police.

Also I don't think your Genius example is anything close to "perfect". The genius' answer a fair response. If it's a software driver issue how is he supposed to fix it? The customer was given a possible workaround until a software patch comes out. What the hell else can the poor guy do?

I'm so confused. How is it any inconvenience to you? And something tells me you've never worked in retail. I'm sure if you were the manager and lost hundreds if not thousands of dollars by people walking out the door with stolen goods then you'd install a receipt check system too. And most people don't mind either so it's not like you will effect their business. Infact they'd probably lose more money hiring enough loss prevention staff and installing cameras to watch every person herpa-derping around the store in order to make up for a lack of receipt checks. Think about it logically dude.

Btw you're every retail employees nightmare lol

If you're downloading software from TPB and NOT paying for it, it is theft, plain and simple. The owners of TPB aren't buying ANY of this software or music. In fact, they are only hosting the mechanism to list and guide people to the torrents. And if it isn't theft, why do they keep having to relocate their servers to avoid a takedown by local governments?. Finally, why did they get sued by the government of Sweden for $30 million.

Your reasoning is flawed:

They are checking your bag and comparing your receipt to whats in the bag. Shop Lifters do not typically put their stolen items in a bag just given to them by a cashier. It is usually hidden on their body. The "Security" dudes are not searching the person, they are searching the bag of paid stuff.

Make no mistake, this process is to prevent their STAFF from checking out their friends or accomplices and "pretending" to checkout stuff and put it in the bag unpaid. It is an employee check, not a shoplifter check. Get better employees instead of treating your customer like crap.

Even if it was to prevent shoplifting... Compare it to this. You go to a Bank and withdraw money from your account. At the door a security guard asks you for your receipt and cash so he can make sure the cash you have matches the receipt to prevent a robbery. That doesn't make any sense does it?

Once you have PAID for your items, they are no longer the property of Best Buy, they have lost their right to protect property.

How about this... you order something from AMAZON and have it shipped to your house. When it gets there the FedEX guy asks you to open the box in front of him and present a copy of your invoice so he can make sure you didn't steal something between the shipping point and your door.

Maybe you have heard of this thing called the FOURTH AMENDMENT which makes it illegal to search a person, house, papers or effects without their permission or a warrant?

Not to mention, Best Buys prices suck. Why pay MORE to be treated like crap.

Is this guy trolling? I can't tell

I can't tell either. His logic is a bit off.

I go to Best Buy very frequently, however, I do not necessarily enjoy going into the store. It seems as of late, they have really "upped" their sales game. You can now no longer walk about 10 feet without a different employee asking if you need help, then when you respond "No", they go on trying to tell you about something else. And trust me, I get it, but that does not mean that it isn't obnoxious.

In regards to buying your MBP there or at the Apple Store, I do not think there should be such a difference other than what deal you can get. Someone else mentioned if the App Gift Card means more to you than $100, than do that, or vice versa.

If you go into Best Buy ready to ignore any sales person and still get spoken to, you should be fine. Just have to have the right mind set or know exactly what you are getting and go grab it and check out.

I went to best buy almost 2-year ago and talked to the manager to work out some deal. Not sure if this was the same time apple having their free ipod or not because I wasn't a student. I got the MBP with free Mightymouse bluetooth, MS Office, and some other apps i forgot.
