I'm sorry you had a bad experience purchasing your MB at BB. I've had both good and bad experiences in the computer dept. at our BB, but tend to shrug them off, as most are lacking in overall computer knowledge, and base their suggestions on their personal tastes. It's ironic when I consider the latest BB commercial I saw, where they mentioned twice that they carry Apple computers, and had a female employee do a mind meld on a customer to determine his needs perfectly, heh. Not that anyone expects them to live up to that folly, but it would be nice if they were better trained, and able to assist with all the products they carry, without the "look man, I'm making minimum wage and just trying to get through my shift" attitude. But then, I suppose BB would have to cough up a decent wage, eh?

Actually, the salesman had every right to push a PC. They are generally cheaper, more powerful, and 90% of people choose them anyway.

If he thought you wanted a mac just to buy into the brand (and weren't entirely sure of the spec decrease that would accompany the purchase), then although a comparison would have been fairer, suggesting a PC was not 'evil'.

Moreover, his opinion may be that Mac OS X is not worth the $2-300 that is implied in the component mark-up.

Alternatively, he could be on commission for certain brands, and know next to nothing about computing in general :D <----- Most likely scenario  :D

Peace and God Bless!

Why Apple NEEDS stores.

This is why Apple NEEDS to have it's own stores. Nothing new here, my mom used to work Demo Days at Best Buy, that had to be about 15 years ago and even then she would get heckled by Best Buy employees during her presentations. After she finished they would ask the customers if they were ready to stop looking at toys and shop for a real computer. Before Apple stores I use to go to Comp USA same thing there. The employees would try to sway the people looking at macs to a wintel machine. I was at my local Fry's store a couple of weeks ago, the wireless station for the Apple section they had named Apple Crap Network. I asked for a manager on the way out and told him, he didn't care, told me he would be happy if they didn't have to sell that crap. This will never change, I've seen volunteer groups go as far as to visit stores where they sold macs to try to keep the machines running and the area looking good. I'm sure someone out there has or had a good experience with a store that sells macs and wintel machines at the same place but I never have.

So I'm going to Best Buy today because the MacBook I bought there is cracked and broken. I first went to the Apple Store and they said it wasn't covered by Apple, but they saw the MacBook box and told me it was definitely damaged by Best Buy. It's been about 4 months since my sister bought me the MacBook and I'm not sure if Best Buy will replace it. She just returned from college for break and the MacBook was bought under her name so she couldn't take me before. I wonder how it will go??

best buy just sucks. I went to get a external HDD inclosure and this guy (a manger as it said on his tag) told be that this one would work with the HDD i described and i read the box and it said it could do SATA. I get it home and nope no adapter. $57

And of corse you cant take it back because its opened

ya you can i return things there all the time

logitech sent me a replacement mouse and i put the old mouse in the new packaging and they still took it.

take it back.
online you can find a enclosure for under 40 and better ones

I wouldn't get too worked up about it.. maybe the Apple employee was off sick that day; or on a break and PC guy stepped in. And perhaps PC guy doesn't make commission on the Apple stuff as it is a seperate area so he tried to push you over to a PC.

I used to sell computers years ago and all the salespeople had their brand favourites that they would push customers towards. It was easier to sell the models that you owned yourself or had experience with.

this is the reason why i still have a 90 gift card at best buy.
things on newegg even after shipping are ridiculously cheaper

I recently went to a Best Buy. They have like an Apple section and separate employees. The "Apple" employee walked up to me and asked me and said "What are you interested in today? I said a MacBook. They responded. "I don't think you want a Mac. They aren't as great as a PC."

I got really mad. And asked why?

But then in the middle of his explanation, which I was not listening to I just said, "I came here for a MacBook. Can I please get one"

I walked out with a MacBook, just the one I wanted.

Can they do this??? Is there any place to report this?

I'm sorry if this isn't the right area to post. :D

Nope you cannot report it. They are probably right too. Maybe the customer has a budget of $500. I work part time in an electronics store and most of the customers have a budget limitation of $500 or $600, and inspite of the vista bashing, it is a pretty good OS, the problem lies in bloatware.

The problem with the Apple stores is that they only have stuff is expensive for no reason whatsoever. Simple example is the Mighty mouse, which is $79.99
The equivalent bluetooth version by logitech is $49.99(it does not have the dongle) which is much better than the dreadful mighty mouse.

Then comes the Hard drives ,they only have the expensive LACIE crap, when I want more options to choose from. Bestbuy and circuit city, inspite of their issues, atleast offer us more choices..

dude try online for hdd, they are incredibly cheaper

You can report them to the store manager. They probably get better spiffs for selling other computers, but they are not supposed to disparage any products.

Neither Best Buy or Circuit City get any type of anything for selling certain products. I used to work at both.

As for the sales people, any major retailer you have to take them with a grain of salt. You will never get an "expert" that works for $8 an hour, it just isn't there. Not to mention that the associates in the apple sections probably know nothing about apple and want to try and sell you what they are comfortable talking about.

As far as disparagement is concerned, no they're not to do that.

AFAIK BB does not give spiffs...they care the most about the warranty.

Are you ever right. I worked at Circuit City a while back, but I'm sure this hasn't changed at all. It didn't matter what brand you sold as long as you pushed, and sold, that extended warranty. There was no commission, but if you wanted to keep your job you hit your quota each month.

i would have interrupted him and asked him how much commission he would make off a macbook purchase ....let him calculate it and then tell him/her that they would have made that, and walked away.

i hate when salesppl don't LISTEN. it's the most basic principle of sales tactics...

I hate going to Best Buy. 80% of the time, it's some idiot 17 year old kid who knows sh*t about sh*t trying to tell me what I should buy. I always do my own research on products before I buy anything. Chances are, if you have kids, they know more about the employees at Best Buy.

I had an aunt get a grant to purchase some iPods to record Podcasts for school related things... don't know the whole story on the grant thing... but, she got 2 iPod Classics, and an iPod Touch. The people at Best Buy sold her 3 Belkin Microphones that plug into the bottom and assured her they would work with ALL iPods. Well, they don't work with the iPod Touch! That's an extra $40 item she has to return and hopefully not pay a restocking fee because some kid doesn't know what he's talking about.

Sorry to go on a rant... haha.

i've never been a huge fan of best buy. the employees are underpaid and lack knowledge of their product, which shows. If I ask them a question more advanced than "where do you keep your computers" or something very basic, they generally need to go look it up online...which I can do from home without some guy trying to sell me stuff I don't even want. Not all employees are like this obviously, but the vast majority are.

Also, Best Buy (in the stores I've been too) generally carries the previous generation of apple computers at the current generations price. screw that.

You don't go to the apple store to buy your peripherals. You buy the computer there and your peripherals/ram elsewhere. They sell those items for the individual who doesn't know computers/computer products and who wants an "all in one" solution immediately.

Still I have yet to find a firewire800 external hd in an electronics supermarket. They only have this usb2 crap.

So much for choices...

But I'm in europe so excuse me if these shops have fw800 hds in the US.

Look for the Western Digital MyBook with FW800/400/USB2/SATA

I went to Best Buy yesterday. We had a very big argument with all the managers. They didn't want to replace my MacBook, because I was out of the 14 day range. They even admitted that it was most likely damaged in the store. They had no solutions for me and the General Manager was really racist and she kept interrupting while I was explaining. I am seriously NEVER going to purchase ANYTHING from BEST-BUY EVER EVER EVER AGAIN! I have learned my lesson, but can I do anything about how they treated me. I called Best Buy corporate offices yesterday because the manager told us to lie to Apple and say that I dropped my MacBook?? Will this even work? And we told that to corporate and they said that none of their employees are like that. I really want to make a big dispute with Best Buy specifically the one I went to. What can I do? I don't want to sue but something like that almost.

Actually that figure is closer to 87% and is quickly going down as people get more and more fimiliar with the Apple brand. If the person had really cared about the customer, he would have mentioned that the Mac would have a lower total cost of ownership and suffer less software bugs and viruses/crapware than any PC. The PC might have better specs for the same price, but that advantage quickly goes away once you install windows on it and start doing anything other than web browsing.

As I type away on my Dell :( man its time for a mac again.
