I pre-ordered my Verizon iPhone 12 Pro on the Best Buy website last Friday morning but was wondering:

Are these models fully unlocked? I chose the option to pay the full amount when I get charged. I heard before I had to wait 60 days after I activate it before it’s unlocked.

Also is there a way to avoid having to pay the $40 upgrade fee that will be applied to my Verizon bill?

Don’t quote me on this as I’m not sure if it’s 100% true. My understanding is that all iPhones are unlocked unless you’re purchasing it as part of the AT&T installment plan. The only difference between ordering it with a carrier is that a Verizon SIM card will come in the shipping box (not the sealed iPhone box). Since the phone was paid for in full, Verizon would have absolutely no purpose in locking it. Locking is typically only done so people can’t do carrier financing and then not pay for the device.
As for the activation fee, sadly your only recourse is to likely call Verizon and complain about it. AT&T and Verizon both charge an activation fee whether or not you order online or go to the store. However, on Verizon’s website and on the Apple website, the activation fee is only $20 so it might be worth a call.

I believe Best Buy policy copies carrier policy. My guess is you'll have to request a full unlock. I'm not sure what VZW's policy is but I doubt if you walked into their store and paid full price it would automatically be unlocked but I could be wrong.

Likely the Verizon model will be locked 60 days. The ATT one, if financed, will be locked during this time. Otherwise, get with ATT to unlock.

Best Buy is only selling these new iPhones for postpaid at this time.

Best Buy no longer sells unlocked iPhones. It will be locked to Verizon for 60 days like you said. But since you paid in full you might be able to call up Verizon and get them unlock it right away.

Are you sure about this? I have gift cards from Best Buy, and was waiting for the iPhone 12 to drop, but now I can't purchase it from Best buy. What is the reasoning behind this given they're still selling iPhone 11 unlocked?

Not 100%. But per an employee they said they phased them out about 6 months ago. Didn't ask why but I'm guessing it has to do with the money they make from carriers/activations/etc and lack there of on the unlocked models. Or maybe just Covid cutbacks. They also stopped giving rewards points for Apple purchases. Further incentive to not buy a phone there I guess.

But after 60 days, a Verizon iPhone 12 bought at Best Buy would be fully unlocked and at that point the same as if you had bought an unlocked phone from Apple?

Hi, Did you unlocked the phone successfully? I am also try to use my gift card to purchase a new iPhone from bestbuy. I went to the store , they told me ,the phone can’t be unlocked and I have to buy it with a plan ? Later I call Verizon, the representative told me if I buy a full price iPhone, just call them and they would help me unclock the phone right away. I went to Apple store, the staff told me all the phone is unlocked, unless you buy the phone is from att ? I am confused. I just want to know, if I use my gift card to buy a bestbuy to purchase a full price Verizon iPhone 12, is it can be unlocked successfully? Thanks

Can I purchase a paid in full T-Mobile phone from Best Buy - and the simply switch in my Verizon sim during activation? I don’t want to purchase a Verizon phone from Best Buy as it gets locked to Verizon for 60 days upon activation.

I went to Best buy yesterday, they said they can't sell full price unlocked phone .

If you purchase from carriers or Best Buy, they are locked anywhere from 40 to 60 days.

Yes the only two locking scenarios I know of are AT&T on installments and if you activate with a VZW SIM, it locks for 60 days.

even if you buy it at full price, the phone will be locked and there is no way to unlock it for free? an exact answer is needed ... anyone knows about this?

My experience was that if you buy a Verizon IPhone full price from Best Buy they will be locked for 60 days per Verizon policy. The only getting around it was to call Verizon customer support and state your case or your part of the military going overseas.
