I showed up at my bestbuy around 11:15 and the sales force seemed to be in shock. Only 10 people had been in line for the 10am opening and when I got there the store was practically empty and they had dozens and dozens of each model and color.

Great Stuff...Anything else?

Best Buy employee almost ripped the wrapping off the ipad I was buying.

Apple sold entirely out of pre-order stock.

Lots of people pre-ordered this year after seeing how well it went previous years. Apple is well-prepared this time around stock-wise.

I heard Apple might allow pre orders this year. Since only a couple of people know this I wonder if it had any effect on lines?:D

Ha! Maybe they will have trouble moving these things.

It's really just an incremental upgrade anyway; just a screen.

If it had also been a quad core these things would move quicker, perhaps.

Walked into the Apple Store here at 11am. No line, picked up my 16GB Black iPad, and walked right out after paying. Forget the hassle of trying to order online.

I dropped into my local Best Buy around 11:30 and they were all out of AT&T models and only had a couple 16 GB Verizon models left for 4G. Still had black and white wifi's in all sizes, but they expect them gone by days end. Remember, lots of people have work at 10 AM. What remaining stock is left in all stores will probably be gone by tonight once people are off work. I'm still glad I preordered.

Yes, it's such a hassle to click the "preorder" icon. Very taxing.

No *need* per se, but it's more common to see a person upgrade a phone yearly as opposed to a $500+ laptop, or iPad in this case.

Isn't the iphone just as expensive if not more if you aren't buying it subsidized?

I mean I think my iphone (just a 32 gb) before the 4s came out (and the 4s equivelant now) is around 700-750 out the box.

I think it would be cheaper to upgrade the iPad every year.

But, cause of 2 year subsidies, you could argue more people upgrade their phone more often (every 2 years) than they would upgrade an iPad.

Haha...I was just about to say the same thing. I got on my iMac and ordered the new iPad in about 2 minutes and a little over a week later FedEx delivers it to my door. It was so much of a hassle!! ;)

People are forgetting this is an iPad and not an iPhone. There really is no need to upgrade your iPad yearly.

Absolutely...

Not enough of a difference between the new device and last years to get the majority of current iPad owners to upgrade.

Anyhow, I went to my local BB 10 minutes before they opened and I was the third person in line. I asked the guy helping me how many iPads they had. He said "a lot" in a tone of voice that sounded like he was disappointed (probably because they made him work today and now they're going to send him home).

:)

I'm not sure I understand you guys. For weeks, people have been creating thread after thread wondering what Best Buy's status will be with the new device. Once people start sharing their experiences, they get a "cool story, Bro" response.

This is exactly what they said at my Best Buy. I was in there around 11:15 too and they had plenty of stock and only said around 10 showed up early for it. They had extra staff on hand for it as well.

One good thing is they are putting screen protectors on for free today on phones and tablets since it is the new iPad launch day.

There are tons of unsold iPads at Best Buy. Apple seems to have front loaded all resellers based on the reports from my fellow Apple enthusiasts. I've spoken to guys that have just walked into various stores, no lines, no wait, any model you want.
