My local Best Buy interpreted the eligability to be those who bought the iPhone 4 at Best Buy or anyone who is a Reward Zone member, regardless of where you bought the phone. I bought mine from AT&T but since I am a Reward Zone member they gave me a FIX4 and installed it for free.

One thing to note is that the section that covers the lower left (i.e the problem area) was slightly too long so it had to be trimmed. Before trimming, the strip either covered part of the volume down botton or partially covered the speaker hole. It was clear that the extra length was not due to stretching the skin. I'd be interested to hear if others have experience the same issue or if there is just bad batch of FIX4 shields.

The local Best Buy told me it was for people who bought the iPhone 4 there until the guy re-read it and agreed it was for RZ members OR purchasers.

I had them install it just in case and 2 of the kits were cut too long but the third one was way better. It comes just to the edge of the actual speaker but it's still better than the first two that went clear over the whole speaker.

I've got aloe vera for sunburns but the determining factor is if i can leave my iPhone 4 and/or iPad out in the sun and not overheat them -_-

I think the overheating issues are a bit silly. (Please do not get me wrong, Apple does have issues like every company that has ever existed. The proximity sensor on the iP4 is a real issue. 3G issues on iOS4 might be a real issue.)

Every expensive electronic device that is designed by a responsible person will have heat sensors to turn off the device if it goes beyond the safe operating temperature. Some electronics companies may want to set the shut off value high shortening the life of the product and risking the batteries going, "BOOM!"

I am quite a bit more conservative than Apple when it comes to the temperature I will let my electronics run. This is not a design defect, this is a design choice.

There are 3 Best Buys right near my house. The first one I called had heard nothing about this. The other two said "come on down". I went into the store and they gave me the invisible shield and installed it - no charge. I did not buy my iPhone from Best Buy, but I brought my Reward Zone card and it couldn't have been easier. The girl who installed it did a pretty damn good job too. Big pain in the butt to get it on their perfect, but once it's on, it fits really well and you can barely even see that it's there.

I just tested it and it does NOT appear to fix the death grip issue.

Best Buy fixing the iPhone 4 with sticky tape - nice touch. What a PR disaster this must be!

Actually could look trendy. Seriously. I like it. :)

Why didn't Apple cover the antenna in some clear-coat to reduce the effect right out of the box?

You will note that it's been reported in this very thread that these thin strips do nothing for some people with the i4 antenna issue. My guess is that a thinner clear coat would fix the problem for an even smaller percentage of people (but it might help for the a few who just need, say, a couple dBM better signal to be happy). The thickness of these films and coats is so thin that it's almost (but not quite) the same as a direct short at microwave frequencies.

who cares, BB butchered my install so I had to take it to the Zagg store at the Garden State Plaza (mall)....
i wouldn't trust them with my phone again.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

I was told the same thing.

I went to my local best buy and they said i had to buy it from them or have a rewards zone card. I do have a rewards zone card and they even installed it for me too. it is really cheap looking and looks like it will rip off very easily. But hey, its free

Anyone who wAnts this should call their local store and ask. I did. They said it was for anyone. Went up there and got it install for free with receipt and everything. Just try it. Employees failure can be your success

This is from the Zagg website:

"ZAGG has conducted extensive testing to determine if our products can help this problem, including internal tests, independent lab tests, and research with consumers in the wireless industry. Although the signal strength bars may still decrease from your hand covering the antenna, our results show that each of our solutions help prevent dropped calls and data connections."

I'm not sure how much credit to give this.

Best Buy rejected me

I went into my local Best Buy last night in Aurora, IL (Yes, that Aurora - the one from Wayne's World) and when I asked the "mobile" guy, he asked me if I bought the phone at Best Buy. When I told him no, he said it was only if you bought it there. I asked if they had to verify that the purchase was made at BB and he said yes. Then he said that Best Buy was doing it to "clean up Apple's mess." He was a bit of a douche.
Can anyone verify what this guy told me? Should I just go to another Best Buy and try again? I only want the shield for protection. I don't have any issues with dropped calls, call clarity or signal attenuation with my iPhone 4.

After reading some of these comments I think that even if Best Buy was giving away free iPhone 4s some people would still complain.

It's more than they have to do and if you don't like it don't do it. It never stops amazing me that some people just feel the need to complain.

If case you have not heard, Apple did a press conference and THEY are giving away free bumpers, so I think the issue of "telling" customers that there is a problem is already taken care of.

No Apple are not promoting the free cases as a 'fix', they are doing it very subtly as an offer. This on the other hand seems to promote the problem with the product more directly, from the way its advertised to the strips' name.

Ghost Armor does the same

Got it installed and it does stop the total loss of signal and dropped calls that touching the gap causes, taking it down to mere mass attenuation levels.

So less than 0.5% of owners have actually reported the antenna problem to Apple, and I know at least 7 people who have in iPhone 4. Not one of them has any issues with reception, regardless of how they hold it.

The way media has blown this whole thing out of proportion is pathetic. Just because they are Apple, just because the device is not "perfect", just because people only spread news when it is bad news... Never mind the fact that plenty of other smartphones out there suffer the same, that doesn't matter.

People need to get a sense of reality here and grow up.

wow...you really buy everything steve jobs says hook, line, and sinker. talk about a fanboy.

everyone knew that the reception was an issue, and that apple didn't have a fix for it...which would explain why apparently so few people called in to complain, because what would be the point?

as far as "plenty of other smartphones" suffering from the same problem, i have yet to see another smartphone that can completely lose signal by placing a single finger on the corner of the phone.

seems like you are the one that needs to get a sense of reality, instead of buying whatever reality jobs and apple are trying to (and apparently have) sold you

Look at the join date - that this could be a calculated 'apologist' propaganda account is entirely possible.

Look at the misinformation:

Everyone knows nothing about what 'owners' have reported, we were only told what % had bothered to call AppleCare, just one way of communicating with Apple and no ernest person thinks all those with problems contacted AppleCare.

Everyone knows its not simple mass attenuation of the antenna that 'plenty of other smart phones out there suffer the same' because if it was:

- There'd be videos of other phones showing 20-24 dBm drops in signal strength with a single touch of a single finger.

- The dropped calls would be able to be reproducible touching the bottom antenna alone, it wouldn't require touching 2 antennas at once.

- The dropped calls wouldn't be greatly decreased or totally eliminated by just about anything that prevents touching the two antenna's at once. The bumper would do little to help if this was because the phone was acting as a fleshy Faraday cage.

We know that Apple has an organized misinformation campaign about this from both the AppleCare memo and Steve's press conference and having shills out spreading 'The Big Lie' would be an integral part of such an effort.

No one will be shocked when the edges of new iPhones suddenly are coated with something in either a revision 'B' or the iPhone 5.

That the iPhone 4 has a missed bug isn't shocking, version 1.0 of most new hardware has something - the part that's disturbing is that Apple will actively lie to its customers about it. They've passively ignored problems before, and maybe they've even actively lied like this before, but never on this scale and never so obviously to so many people. The big change is many no longer trust Apple to 'make things right' or tell the truth. That's why 'antennagate' has become a milestone event.

Why didn't Apple cover the antenna in some clear-coat to reduce the effect right out of the box?

I guess if they did all the iphone 4 users who dont have the "clear-coat" would demand that there iphone's also be covered in said clear coat or replaced for a new one with coating already on it.

It was already confirmed by someone in this very thread, the 4FIX does prevent calls from dropping.

So does a piece of duck tape or a band-aid or sellotape or scotch tape or even the sticky part of a post-it note, then there's nail varnish and a small drop of spray paint. If you browse through some of the sites with too many suggestions to list, there are loads of fixes for the antenna problem. but they don't go on like it's some revolutionary product of the decade. And most are free to hand in almost any kitchen or garage.

Plus how long does any one really think a piece of plastic stuck to the edge of the phone will last before pealing off.

4FIX seem to be jumping on the band wagon with a weak solution that won't actually provide a real longterm fix.

Got mine today.

The guy was helping a customer with some windows mobile phone (lulz) and seemed aggravated...told me it would be a few minutes...ok no problem. Then 2 older ladies walked up and had questions about some senior citizen pay as you go phone....he was flustered lolol.

He just handed me the Zagg strips and off I went. Didn't ring them up, didn't question me if I bought my phone there (I didn't), didn't question me if I have a BB rewards card (I do)...just handed them over.

They seem poorly made, they're not cut evenly and are very stretchy when putting them on. If you mess up and pull them off they stretch too long then.

Not sure if I'll keep them on, but for free, I'm not complaining.

I did have 4 bars of service (still on iOS 4.0), and when I put just my finger on the bottom left connecting the 2 antennas I actually gained 1 bar to 5 bars LOL. We'll see if it really helps during a call tho...

took advantage of this today. was previously using scotch tape. i didn't buy my phone from BB, but am a RZ member.

Got mine today from BB in Gainesville, VA.

Did not purchase from BB, but I am a RewardZone member.

One store person did not question much. The other one was really nosy and kept saying "wait a minute" "hold on" "read this" "bla bla".

I opted to install myself. No way I am handing my IP4 to some BB kiddo to get wet.

Easy to install (as long as you know how to keep it wet, but not dripping wet).
It is now drying overnight.
