As a first time Best Buy preorder user, anyone know if “ship by” on the release date means they’ll ship it by release day or will it arrive by that day?

To be more specific, the question is whether this is a flaw in their system. Does it ever say deliver by for preorders?
Best Buy isn't big enough to have a courier agreement with a "hold until delivery date" requirement. They can only offer a ship date.

I just changed it to in store pick up. They don’t do curbside pickup for iPhones but I’ll brave a pandemic for my annual upgrade. =)
I can’t decide if I want 12 or spend extra money for 12 pro. I came from a 11 pro max got sick of the size.
Had this same question when I ordered my 12 Pro yesterday. Pickup says available for 10/23 pickup. I’ll just deal with pickup.
I believe you will see more and more retailers showing 'ship by' dates because there are anticipated to be shipping delays this holiday season as carriers are pushed past capacity from more and more people shopping online and shipping to home. By showing a 'ship by' date they are specifying that commitment with the hope that consumers won't hold any carrier delays against the retailer because they shipped by the time they said they would.
I went large with the XS and will never go back. I even contemplated a mini this time. They just don’t make pockets large enough.
I just talked to Best Buy chat and they said if it says ship by 23rd you will have it by the 23rd. If that helps

I just checked the site and for the one I want it says it’ll be shipped by 10/30. I’m going to just leave mine alone.
I did the chat thing with them and they said I’d have it 1-3 days after. That’s when I changed it. Seems like their customer service folks are as unsure about it as us.

Nope, went to preorder like I was putting in a new order. Wanted to see what those dates were first. I left it alone.
That was my fear. Usually don’t know what they are taking about. Left mine alone for pickup.
Best Buy is terrible for preorders.
The last time I preordered with them for in store pickup my order wasn’t even available on launch day for store pick up. But I could walk in and purchase one at the same store without even a preorder. I ended up just canceling my preorder and buying it online for pickup on the day it was available. Doesn’t make sense lol

They do a pretty good job of shipping me video games on launch date. I'm surprised they struggle with phones.
