interesting. i stand corrected. it did sound like the poster implied that best buy implied that there were differences within verizon, but still.

while my verizon ipad was being rung up, this "2 year vrz" line item kept coming up for $0.00. i asked several times to ensure that i wasn't being signed up to this post paid service, and the employee, after asking someone else, said that i would not be signed up. that $0.00 charge is also on my receipt. i just want to make sure i wasn't swindled. i still have the ability to pick my plan on the ipad, but i worry that if i tried to actually sign up something would change, or i would trigger a contract. can anyone confirm that i'm in the clear? thanks.

I see that too... but I am able to sign up for the normal pay as you go plans on my ipad...

Best Buy (Verizon, AT&T and all non-Apple stores really) appear to get little to no gross margin on selling iPads. So their business model is to upsell you extras when you purchase your iPad.

I attempted to buy an iPad from Verizon on Friday morning. They didn't have the one I wanted in stock, so the guy attempted to bring me a new one and "set it up in-store." I said I didn't want that, so he decided to "order" one from the Verizon warehouse for delivery yesterday morning before 10AM (which seemed a bit unbelievable to me). He again attempted to "activate" this iPhone. I said clearly I didn't want to activate it. He sighed and proceeded with the order. I ended up attempting to cancel this order (knowing stock was available on Friday at Apple and Best Buy stores), but have gotten no cancellation confirmation from Verizon. Didn't get a Saturday delivery either.

I go to Best Buy to try to avoid the Apple Store circus. Walk right in, ask for an Verizon iPad. They send me to the cell phone section. I am in a line, the Best Buy guy in front of me is telling to European tourists that they "must" activate service today if they want to purchase an iPad with cell capability. I give him a nasty glare and get called to the register. I ask for a Verizon iPad, they give me one, then they attempt to sign me up for service with a fee (refused), sell me a case (refused), sell me accidental drop insurance (refused), sell me Best Buy credit card (refused).

You are technically getting $230 off because you would be buying a Wi-Fi only version of the iPad which is $130 less than the 3G option, plus with the mobile broadband promotion you be getting an additional hundred dollars off, totaling to $230.

Ok, technically yes, there was a saving of $230 if the person was planning on buying both an iPad and a hotspot that day. But that's not how they were selling it. He straight up said the 4G model cost $230 more than the wifi model then talked about buying a hotspot. He never mentioned either, that those who fell for this would be locked into a contract. He did imply that that those who bought the 4G model were getting less for there money. It was slimmy, just saying. I've had some good interaction with BB employees and I've had some bad, I just say, ya gotta watch em.

Actually ... If you activate it using the interface on the iPad, you are a pre-paid customer, and you can only use Verizon-owned towers. You won't be able to roam onto other carriers that Verizon has roaming agreements with (including the roaming that would be free within the united states in rural areas).

If you have a post-paid plan, you can roam onto their free roaming partners within the USA, and roam internationally as well (for a substantial fee)

Personally, I am rarely out of major cities, and it wouldn't be an issue for me, but I am on a post-paid plan anyway. When I'm out of the USA, I'll be picking up a local sim card.

So I will have worse service if I activate on my iPad? Even if I sign up for the 2GB-$30/month plan? This seems kinda silly.

So how do I get on a post paid plan? Do I call Verizon or go to Best Buy, and will either of these result in an activation fee? Because if the plans are the same price except there is no $20/month plan, i would rather have choices for better service than save $10.

Also is there anyway to see if I would be using these "roaming" towers that don't belong to Verizon? Do they include them on their coverage map?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to know what I am dealing with now before being ambushed when I go to activate/use the 4G!

It's the same LTE either way. Only real difference if you post pay vs per pay is that you get the automatically get another GB added for 10 dollars if you go over whereas I think it just stops dead on the prepay plan when you go of your allotted data.

With post pay you will have to pay monthly ongoing and there is a 35 dollar activation fee.

For me my iPad will only go on a data plan "as needed" so after this month I may not use my LTE again for the next 6 months depending on what is going on in my life. I am on wifi most of the time. 1gb is also perfect for me. I have an AT&T iPhone with the piss poor 200mb dat plan as well.

For LTE there is no roaming. The difference will be in 3G roaming. To get access to the roaming towers, you just need to sign up for a post-paid account (which requires a credit check). You can do this by calling them up, going into a Verizon store, or a reseller like Best Buy.

To see what would be considered roaming, check out their coverage map here:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...pe=NEWREQUEST&zip=94531&city=Antioch&state=CA

Select coverage type "Prepaid".

As far as activation fees, I'm really not sure -- I already had a Samsung Jetpack (LTE Mobile Hotspot), and transferred that line to my iPad. They didn't charge me an activation fee to transfer the line.

that didn't happen at all up here in Canada, guess our best buys are better

More like a difference in Canadian laws. For example, in the US, a company can advertise a 'free' phone by saying you'll get a rebate making the net amount zero. In Canada, a free phone must be a free phone without hoops to jump through. Canadian laws tend to be more consumer-centric when it comes to contracts, advertising and agreements.

There's a reason I don't give BB my money. Sounds like typical BB shenanigans to me. A few years back they got caught on their matching their website scam. THey claimed they would match their website but when you went to the store they would pull up their website and show that it showed the same in store price. Except they had a separate website for showing in the store...

That company absolutely does not mind tricking people into giving them more money (not just using marketing ploys but outright trickery/lieing).

I was a little puzzled to have to "active" my AT&T iPad in store, I didn't have to with my original iPad. Took over an hour. I watched him close to make sure I wasn't getting roped into a contract. Once in the car I fired the iPad up and was able to transfer the balance of the originals data plan over (and keep the 2GB for $25 too). So I don't know what exactly all the activation in store was about, maybe another attempt to get a contract out of me. Others who were in line for the 4G model just picked up and walked out, maybe it was my punishment for questioning the BB guys knowledge.

Best Buy asked me if I wanted them to activate my iPad in the store, and I politely told him no. He didn't push after that. Usually if you tell them no once they don't tend to keep pushing.

this whole thread makes me sick. just like verizon and radioshack employees being told to push android phones instead of iphones with a bunch of untrue crap because they make more on android.

Exactly...An informed consumer PLUS the ability to politely say, "No" is all that is needed in this situation.

Best Buy should know better. Not sure what they are trying to pull. They must get some type of commission with the carriers.

They do know better. They know that if you can't set it up yourself, they can set it up however they want. Don't know why somebody wouldn't do their own setup.

That's the problem. Most of us didn't know this. I assumed they were just being nice and activating for us like they do at the apple store with iPhones. Boy, was I wrong!!!

EXACTLY. And honestly at that point all I could think about was ripping the iPad out of the box, and firing this baby up so I could view the retina display first hand! :D

Amen, bro...Same here. I politely said, "No, I will activate at home," and I was out the door in a few minutes. :)

I have a verizon iPad and want to use it on AT&T and when I went to the local AT&T store they told me since the iPad cannot activate the sim they would have to put me on a monthly payment plan. I told them I did not want to do that so I asked if I could keep the sim and they gave it to me.

I ordered a Sim to MicroSIM adapter and am going to activate it in my PS Vita and then use it in my iPad. This way I get the DataConnect plan instead of monthly bills.

After seeing first hand the signal I get for verizon here there is no way I am going to use it. My iPhone sim says 4G but really it is just H+.

My local Best Buy was offering $100 off when you bought and iPad and signed up on a 2 year contract. Now that I read the flyer it's only with a mobile hotspot activation.

I also got suckered into this BS. You're also going to be charged the $35 activation fee if you don't get out of it.

That's not true. You don't get charged an activation fee. I did post pay and on the paper they give you it says $0 for activation. And You can cancel and sign up for a Post Paid account again, whenever you want and be charged no activation fee.

It may be different in your state, but on my receipt it states a $35 activation fee which is only refundable if the iPad is returned within 3 days of purchase. This was also confirmed with 4 different Verizon reps. If it weren't true I wouldn't have gone through the trouble of reversing what best buy did to me.

Oops My Bad. Your talking about Verizon. I got AT&T and they don't charge activation fee. I thought Verizon wouldn't charge activation fee since AT&T doesn't charge it for the iPad. sorry.

I didn't read the entire thread, but for signing you up on a 1 or 2 yr term contract, doesn't BB need your Driver's License, run a credit check, then make you sign the contract... This would a clear indication that something's up!

Or, is there a separate process for iPad post paid plans ?

I actually prefer the post paid plans because the iPad will get service in partner cell areas. I never got any signal in WV with the prepaid plan.

Have some common sense people.

As an employee of Bby, let me set some things straight. First of all I am one that takes pride in where I work and the level of knowledge for me to do my job. People when ever you buy something always know what your getting into before you sign something and ask plenty of questions no matter what. If you have any doubts ask to speak to someone else or don't sign up. Sorry any of you guys not knowing what you were getting into are just foolish.

Secondly I cannot as one employee out of the many in the over 1200 stores validity all of my fellow coworkers but we strive to give the most accurate and truthful information. And to provide you with everything you need to get going. I inks it's this mantra is what sets us apart from other competitors. Best buy is not like any other competitors in that we take the extra time to sit and show you the value of what your buying and all additional parts to make it nothi short of an exceptional experience from whatever your buying. It is our job to show you the value and offer everything we have and to explain it 100 percent. Your not gonna find this anywhere else, Walmart as a huge example and if this is what you don't like well honestly go somewhere else.

Me personally as an employee and a constant shopper all of my experieces there have been nothing short of exceptional, I think when you have a bad it experience it's all vu common to overreact buy making some outrageous statements. The last thing I will close out by saying for every customer I aggravate for doing my job which is showing you all the accessories and offers we have to go with what your buying, the true reward is that 1 or 2 people that no matter what thank you regardless. It's our job to offer these things to you but it's your job to make the decision. It's our job to find the best solution to each customers needs. Sometimes it's the hotspot device sometimes it's the embedded 3g4g and sometimes neither.

I value all of the experiences I've had with my customers and will admit more then not I have customers wanting my information for me to help them outside of Bby. I do my job exceptional and all of my fellow co workers.

Those of you that took the time to read everything I had to say I thank you.

Yup, that sounds like something BB would do -- either intentionally or unintentionally since they are both smarmy and have ill-informed staff. I used to love the store in the late 90s/early 00s but then they jumped the shark.

Fortunately, not too late to kill the contract. If you don't get a full refund you should complain to manager or call up the consumer reporter for local TV. I'm sure they'd jump all over a BB + iPad goes wrong story and you'd be doing the community a favor by outing this BB store's tactics.
They are all doing it. Best Buy . Verizon and AT&T. One is no worse then the other. They are all out to make an extra buck any way they can.
