My boss is a compete Luddite around tech stuff, but he balked at the set up costs from Geek Squad on his flat panel tv and surrond sound system. When he told me what he was looking at, I told him to just buy and trot the stuff home and install it himself, and call me if you have problems. Well, he said it took him about half an hour to put it all together and be up and running! "That was easy!" he said. As previously posted, those pesky color coded cables sure make it hard! On topic, count me in for Crucial as THE spot for RAM. They have always been the best to deal with. And Tech Restore for repairs!:)

I used to work at Geek Squad, and let me tell you....the general public is just plain dumb. They are really dumb, like...if they didn't think about breathing they would probably just stop all together. People would bring computers in for us to install Microsoft Office on them.....

I had a customer ask me why the computer had an automatic cup holder on it (DVD-Rom drive).

People would bring in 8 year old computers and ask "why dosn't it run anymore? It's only 8 years old."

I had someone ask me what Geek Squad would charge to INSTALL A MOUSE AND KEYBOARD.

Believe me, the average geek squad agent does care about fixing things, and they generally want to help people out. However, getting upset because you had to wait in line is just childish. Time to grow up and put yourself in another persons shoes for once.

There are many reasons to dislike Best Buy... but waiting in line to ask questions is not one of them. The vast majority of consumers are not represented on this forum. They would not go into a store knowing what sort of RAM they need, or even what sort of computer they have. This setup might inconveience the select few who know more than is average, but it prevents regular consumers from buying the wrong RAM and creating headaches for them and Best Buy's staff.

If you want a reason to dislike Best Buy, let me tell you about the CSR who tried to convince me replacing an iPod battery cost $320 and that my warranty was instantly voided by installing non-iTunes songs.

Agreed. They probably "force" you to talk to a CSR to buy memory because of the numerous uninformed consumers that return the products. It must cost them a lot of money to assess returns, deal with the customers, restock, etc.

Stupid Question...

Does Best Buy get the same stock of MBP's as the retail Apple Stores? I've recently been looking into getting a MacBook Pro 15". I went in to two Apple Retail Stores and two Best Buy stores over the past couple of weeks. It always seemed that the Best Buy MBPs ran MUCH hotter than the Apple Store's exact same MBPs. I even made sure that the drive RPM, RAM, CPU speed, graphics cards were identical. I made sure that all were idle for about 10 minutes.

Does Best Buy get crappy floor display models?

You need to remember 2 things: newegg.com and monoprice.com

Go to Newegg for computer parts, they have a very effective rating system, if a product is cheap and has a good rating then get it, it works. You dont need brand name ram, just get the cheapest ram at newegg with a good popular rating. They generally have the lowest prices on the internet and are one of the top sites in terms of service and satisfaction, theyre processing time is practically instant so youll never have to wait extra days for them to pack and ship your stuff like with amazon.

Go to Monoprice for cables (Amazon also has really cheap cables, but watch out for shipping charges, the cable quality can also vary from good to unusable), under no circumstances should you ever buy cables at a store. Not only are they ripping you off but youre supporting an immoral business practice. Monoprice cables are dirt cheap and are all high quality.

Retailers are good for some things but they are not good at all for parts and accessories. Dont even waste your time with them, theres virtually no chance that theyll ever be comparable to places like Newegg or Monoprice.

You sound just like any other stupid and whiny customer that walks into a Best Buy and doesn't have hand and foot service from someone who is probably multitasking 3-4 different customers at once. What makes you think your more important than that other customer that the sales person is already talking to currently, when you had already turned his/her help down previously? Sales people DON'T just walk away after spouting some prices, they ask you if you need any help. You by saying "no" or "just looking" relinquishes their duty from you.

Also, geek squad is a ripoff for those who know computers. For the people who have no idea, it is a life saver.

SO it is safe to assume that you work at the Geek Squad counter?

I am going to get a shirt made that says "monoprice.com", so when i go into "best buy", maybe some people will get a clue. I saw that ridiculous article on gizmodo about best buy charging $130 to plug in a PS3. I think I will go into best buy and go into their computer section and go to that article on every computer!! Yes I am that spiteful. If they are willing to bend people over, (and sadly, people like that) it is my duty to show people how far companies will go to make even more money...

Yeah, Geek Squad is pretty questionable...especially to the upper echelon of tech users. $129 to setup a PS3 is kind of ridiculous. Of course, I think it's ridiculous to pay somebody to fix my car, too. And I hate how much victimizing there is, oh well.

It's all relative, name a task and you can undoubtedly find somebody who is willing to just pay somebody else to do it.

It's all a matter of perspective.

No, I don't work there. Monoprice, hell i'll wear the shirt myself. I just think that the person who started this article is childish for not demanding attention the second a stupid thought has finally processed. I have worked retail for about 3 years of my life. Thankfully that is in the past. I am just saying look at it from the perspective of the person working. Do you want to be bum rushed by 30 people at once, who only grow more angry that you aren't helping them first? Well, you sound more like you would be part of the mob.
