Consumer electronics chain Best Buy today announced that, as of September 26th, it will expand availability of Apple's iPad to all 1,093 stores across the U.S., up from about 675 stores at the device's launch in early April.
Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY), the nation's largest consumer electronics retailer, today announced that it will expand availability of the Apple iPad with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi +3G models to all 1,093 U.S. stores beginning Sept. 26. Best Buy is a preferred channel partner for the Apple iPad, now selling the popular device online (for in-store pick-up) and through Apple Shop locations within 673 Best Buy stores.
Best Buy will also begin carrying an expanded assortment of iPad accessories in its stores.

The announcement is the latest in a series of rumors and official announcements regarding expanded availability for the iPad, which has seen supply shortages ease as Apple has been able to ramp up production of the device. Just yesterday, Apple announced plans to bring the iPad to China and a number of South American countries beginning this Friday. Leaked inventory screenshots also suggest that the iPad will be coming to Target in early October.

Well, that's that. To the question of why availability has increased for iPads, some wondered if it meant they were ramping up production to meet the great demand, or if demand was softening. This Best Buy announcement is an indication of the former. They wouldn't be increasing their buy-in to iPad if demand were softening. They want to get their hands on more iPads.

Bout time! I was in one of their Orlando, FL stores when I was in the states last month. They had zero iPad or even Mac stuff!

Yet I went in another shop about 10 miles away and they had a huge white mac area with iPhones/pads/touch/etc and a 'mac specialist'.

best buy, like target, has chosen to use corporate profits (our money) in the political system to buy electoral results. for this reason, i am boycotting both. i will be buying my ipad (when it comes equipped with a camera) elsewhere.

that said, i am sure this is good news for apple's sales and all those who own AAPL.

For pete sake . . .

Why can't corporations make donations to groups that they support? In the case you mentioned, Target, BBY (and Polaris) gave money to a group that supports lowering taxes for corporations. If I'm a shareholder, I want them to try to do what's right for the company - especially here in tax heavy Minnesota (where target and best buy are based.)

It really isn't any different then the labor unions throwing money at candidates - heck - it may even be worse!

So, money that a corporation earns is now "your" money??

Buying an iPad at Best Buy is like buying a BMW at Fred's Used Car Lot.

Except you get RewardZone points for it.($20 certificate from my iPad purchase alone) You get absolutely dick for buying something at the Apple store, -and the price is the same.
Oh, and it's the same brand new iPad you get at the Apple store.
Fred's used car lot doesn't sell new, fully authorized, fully warrantied BMWs.

Yes I'm serious. The more disturbing question is, are you?

I have a choice. I can purchase an item in two different stores. Both local, both price the item identically. One donates money, the money I would be giving them, to a cause I agree/disagree with. The other does not.

Can you offer one good reason why I should not spend *my* hard earned money as politically as the corporation to which I would be passing it?

Whatever... as I recall Apple themselves has publicly supported/non-supported political issues. You gonna boycott Apple because they use "your" money to support political causes, or do you only do this when a company supports something that you do not?
Totally your choice, just trying to understand your criteria...

I do not think we can tell anything from this announcement (except that iPads will be available in more BestBuy stores). For all we know, BestBuy might simply have too high inventory of iPads in the stores where it sells them and decided to ship them to the stored that had not had iPad before. Or it could be a fire sale before the release of new version of iPad.

labor unions collect dues from members and poll the members to see who to give money to. it's a democratic process.

corporations are not people, should not be allowed to give to the political system. i have no problem with individual people, ceo's board directors, etc. giving their personal money. that's their right as human beings. money i pay, which becomes corporate profits, should not be given into the political system.

Companies have always given to political causes. Those causes just used to be mostly charitable, and generally pretty innocuous: who's going to get bent out of shape about cash for schools programs? They've also always given money to lobbying firms. Non of this is new. I'd personally rather that companies weren't throwing money straight into the political fray, since it serves only to further distort the political process.

As it is, they can, and they are, and some people will feel the need to push back a little. That's called a free market. They make choices, and so can we.

No I can't, nor would I. You can choose to spend YOUR hard earned money anywhere you wish. But after you spend it, it is no longer YOURS.
