Just what the title says - I'm looking for a camcorder to use for general family stuff [recording interactions, special events, and activities with the family (including kids.)] 4k would be nice, but since we don't have a 4k tv it's not really necessary. I'd like something with good audio and picture quality, simple to use, and not too big.

The review sites seem to be outdated so I thought the folks here are more up to date and knowledgable :) The price is just about at the upper limit of what we'd like to pay, so I guess value is also important here.

Thanks.

I would take a look at the Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20. An all-around good consumer camcorder, full HD (not 4K). Fits in your budget. Its successor, the G40, has a few improvements but costs a bit over a grand.
